Speculation for ep 5-10 and after: I think Wilson is going to undergo Living Donor Liver Transplantation (LDLT) to save the POTW. "The donor's liver will regenerate approaching 100% function within 4–6 weeks and will almost reach full volumetric size with recapitulation of the normal structure soon thereafter," says Wikipedia, so the House team will use the six-week hiatus to be able to totally skip the "Wilson recovering" stage and the first ep in January will have him back to normal (or almost normal).

And for those concerned that RSL might use this to seek a permanent path back to full-time Broadway: "Death after LDLT has been reported at 0% (Japan), 0.3% (USA) and <1% (Europe), with risks likely to improve further as surgeons gain more experience in this procedure."

Your thoughts?

In unrelated news, who's going to buy Wilson the Mangroomer for Xmas?

I thought maybe House would come up with a last-minute alternative diagnosis/treatment for the patient like RIGHT before they cut into Wilson or something, cue big dramatic surgery-interrupting scene :) Maybe even figure out that Wilson's old friend is terminal with some other disease, idk. I sort of hope that doesn't happen, 'cause...<3 Wilson <3

I agree on the LDLT, and that House will stay away from the surgery until the very last moment, when he will rap on the OR window from the balcony as Wilson is about to be put under, and Wilson will look up and see him. And that will be the fade-to-black shot, of House standing and watching.

Or ... not. *g*

I hope they address Wilson's recovery, but you may be right about the six-week break thing. Bleh.

ETA that oh my God I am so sorry I looked at the Mangroomer. Yikes.

Until yesterday, I had no idea that the liver would regrow itself after half of it was removed. That's just astounding.

Having learned that, I felt better about what Wilson intends to do, and I hope it works and he can save his old friend. Even if I'm somewhat annoyed at the *POOF* sudden appearance of someone Wilson's known long enough and cares for enough to do such a thing. Wilson's already a wreck; he needs not to lose anyone else just now.

As for the Mangroomer, Wilson doesn't need it; no back hair. Maybe poor Taub ...?

Wilson's sideburns weren't really uneven in yesterday's episode either. ;D

I knew liver would re-grow, but I didn't realize how much of the donor organ could be taken. Up to 70%! Wow.

I would have been astounded by the *poof* friend if in "Wilson's Heart" there hadn't been the miraculously appearing friends with dogs that could've given Amber a tick. Those were more shocking to me -- I don't know why.

Livers are pretty crazy organs. The polar bear's liver has so much vitamin A it's actually toxic for humans, so it's not eaten by the Inuit.

Do you think if they go the surgery route we'll see RSL's naked chest? Is that too much to hope for?

House does love to interrupt surgeries! Heh.

Actually, the first thing I thought when I saw the promo was of course the POTW has a loving and devoted woman plastered to his side, because otherwise there'd be too much speculation about what kind of "friends" Wilson was with him.

And of course I'm going to speculate anyway.

How you doing?

They skipped House's recovery after he was shot, so skipping Wilson's recovery would be par for the course for this show.

It would be wonderful if the last thing Wilson saw going under, and the first thing he saw when he woke again, was House. Be interesting to see what House really does, because I can imagine it going either way. He could be scared enough to be compelled to run away (see: Euphoria), or he could be scared enough to be compelled to be there, to keep an eye on Wilson in the belief that if anything does begin to go south, he'll catch it before the surgeons will.

They do love to use hiatuses to avoid us getting to see men caring for each other. Heh.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for this being a good episode. RSL said we get to see him do work that isn't paperwork or dealing with House! EEEEEEEEEE.

RSL has very clearly avoided showing us his chest in other episodes, so I'm betting he'll avoid it again here. Unfortunately.

The Global promo, apparently, shows that House's instinct is to run, because he's afraid Wilson will die. The stats from Wikipedia (and I clicked through on the citation to confirm) show that donor likelihood of death from the procedure is way below one percent. I wonder if the episode will bring that up or let us imagine that it's a higher likelihood.

Really? Those friends never even pinged my radar; I don't remember any mention of them at all.

I'm guessing that this Tucker fellow is someone Wilson knew as a kid, maybe went to high school with, and then they mostly lost touch when they went to college. So they were just reconnecting and, this being the House-verse, of course the guy gets hit with some lethal disease.

Yeah, I heard all about that promo and I know House's first instinct will be to bolt, but I wonder if he'll overcome that (or fall prey to his control-freak compulsion instead; I'm not picky, and would take either one).

Hee well I assumed it was the liver right off as well, because y'know, if it was a kidney, there's dialysis, and there aren't a lot of organs a live donor could give that couldn't be compensated by a machine, at least for a while.

ALSO I ASSUMED RIGHT OFF THAT THIS IS WILSON'S ~SPECIAL~ COLLEGE FRIEND AND PRACTICALLY HAVE THE FIC ALREADY WRITTEN ;D

But, ouch. I hope so much that he doesn't have to go through another it's-impossible-to-save-this-person-you-care-about thing. *But* I mean with spoilers for the next ep after this...:(

I'm trying to think if they've ever shown time passing from the winter hiatus before this....doesn't it usually sort of pick up where it left off? IDK.

<3 YOU <3

I'm good. I should do an update post :) I'm planning on doing a major domestic fic-drop this week sometime though ;)

I started to think that House would magically come up with another diagnosises, and Wilson won't have the surgery, but now I don't think that will be the case, I think Wilson will have the surgery.

I guess his friend will live, if he dies despite the operation that might be too much ansgst even for House. Although 11 is supposed to be an incredible H/W episode, so maybe.

And yeah, House will definitely show up before the surgery for an awesome, close to "I luv you" scene. :)

what kind of "friends" Wilson was with him.

Do you think it's amusing that this never would have occurred to me?

I just thought, well, that's Wilson for you; if someone you care for is dying, he believes that naturally you'll risk your own life to save theirs.

I don't think it would occur to most people. : ) But the show has a serious complex about showing men having affection with each other (and about men and women being platonic friends for that matter) so it sometimes seems to me that the show very blatantly butches up the het cred because they can't deal with the thought of men being intimate with each other. Not necessarily in a sexual way, but in an emotional way.

Eh, that's what fanfic is for.

w00t for domestic fic! ♥ ♥ ♥

I was noodling around with something in the MFS-verse but never finished it.

I can't recall if they've elapsed time or not in winter hiatus, but then again I think this is the longest winter hiatus they've had.

The world could use more naked men, even if only to balance out all the naked women. I think Ewan McGregor's said something to that effect as to why he does so many nude scenes.

(From the angle and the shadows, the man on the right looks quite a bit like House. I'd better stop there.)

Love the idea of Wilson doing something as impulsive and generous as donating part of his liver. I'm also hoping House reneges and hovers a little at Wilson’s side without ever once suggesting Wilson apologize for suggesting DBS.

Did wonder if House comes up with a last minute diagnosis that halts the surgery, but the 6x11 spoiler about → ←seems to refute this. Possibly, the six week hiatus will not be real time. *prays to the sick!Wilson god*

My only other question: does this mean House loses the bet and the patient doesn’t have cancer? That’s why he is a suitable candidate for a liver donation?

The stuff I read last night indicated that one of the situations in which live donor transplants are most useful is in patients who do have cancer -- in their livers. Because that way the cancer can be removed very quickly, before it spreads to the rest of the body. Whereas being on the waiting list for a cadaver transplant, well, by the time they get one the cancer's likely to have killed the patient anyway.

Dee, if you're right I would be bouncing off the walls with joy. I mean, I'm already ridiculously enthused about the promo... XD
