At a watch party, and so far the themes we've identified for Festivids this year are: thighs, cats, and bears, ETA: and #teamwhale (Christine totally counts as a whale by the way) and girls/women with swords. Will update this post as more become apparent.

Next point: The Festivids vids about Moby Dick are way more awesome than the book because they pull out and explore the interesting themes without the sexism, self-absorption, racism, and boring droning details of the book.

Next point: I have decided some sources are "experience the canon through vids" sources for me. Example- Wheel of Time. Not that it's bad, just that the vids are pretty awesome and I can save time. <3 <3 <3

LOVE LOVE LOVE the vid I received. Vidder very much understood me in how I like this movie!

Oh, bother! I forgot to share the fic I received for Homestice, which is lovely and well worth reading!

We need more fics where Sherlock is Gray-Asexual and more fics from the POV of characters with depression, and this is both. ♥ ♥ It's also a Sentinel & Guide AU, which I haven't explored much but am very interested in now.

Between Two Infinities (8988 words) by inatshej

Summary: Sherlock knows that with the development of optical instruments in the Baroque, humans suddenly found themselves between two infinities: the endlessly vast cosmos and the inconceivably minuscule universe of life on Earth. That's how he feels as a sentinel, stretched between the two infinities and held only by John, his guide. But John has never wanted to be a part of this life. Now that he can fulfill his dream of a wife, a suburban house, and children with Sarah, Sherlock finds himself on the losing side.

I don't think we're supposed to declare a winner of Holmestice but holy hell, this is the winner of Holmestice: Spider stories by rachelindeed.

It's a modern-day London-based re-telling of Sherlock Holmes that is not in any way related to the BBC version, which is a very excellent thing. The writer was inspired by fans discussing a new 'verse they call 221B Baker Towers, where Sherlock is a British Black man "living case to case on a council estate in a dodgy area of London."

In "Spider Stories," John Watson is Jan Hamid, a teenaged immigrant to the UK from Afghanistan, who meets the equally teenaged Sherlock Holmes, and they go from there. And that Jan's relationship with the English language is a key part of the story is just *chef's kiss*.  So well-written, so engaging. I love Jan as much as I have loved all the John Watsons before him.

Oi, this has gotten a bit grim, sorry. Look sharp, though, this is where the lights come on.

Meeting Sherlock Holmes is absolutely worth doing, yeah? Recommend it to anyone. Soundest bloke I ever knew, best and wisest. Plus the lad's hilarious.

Last year, Mr. L and I watched the recent Watchmen series starring Regina King, and were blown away by its magnificence.

Today Festivids opened and there is a Watchmen vid set to the song "Nothing Is Safe" by clipping. The vid reminded me how great and fearsome the series is, and reminded me how I felt watching.

Nothing is safe in America, and I need to continue to grapple with, continue to push myself to fully accept that it was my family, my culture that made it that way. Those villains I see on the screen, who were real, who actually perpetrated that evil? They were doing it for me.

I don't have to exploit the inheritance they left for me, but I do have to understand they wanted me to have it. I do have to stand next to Black people, and Indigenous people, and all other people of color, and acknowledge that they're seeing the past and the present correctly.

Until we White people can do that en masse, and shun the individuals who choose not to, nothing is safe.

If you're a Sick!Wilson fan, you will most likely enjoy the fics in Joy's Whumptober 2019. I particularly recommend Only a Moment. I'm hopeful the title of the collection means that more well-written whumping will be forthcoming.

PS. Last night, for odd reasons, Mr. Laundry brought up the Beliebers, and I commented that RSL fans don't have a cool name for ourselves (thinking also of the Cumberbitches and Freemaniacs). "Well," said Mr. L, "seeing as there's only three of you, you should call yourselves The Three Musketeers."

LOLOLOLOLOLOL It's funny because it's true.

Hi everyone. How's y'all?

Vid rec: Go see The Greatest by [personal profile] bironic because it is the greatest. Another masterpiece a la Starships.

Putting it out to the universe:

I would really, really like to do the kind of work described below for a small publisher in the Washington DC area. I am fortunate enough that I could do it for just a small stipend (maybe even lower than listed below) and the lifetime discount on purchases. My only requirements are that 1) the hours can be done over the weekend; and 2) the people at the publisher not be jerks, with the corollary that the authors they publish not be jerks.

Coffee House Press is a nationally known and renowned nonprofit publishing house located in Northeast Minneapolis. We publish annually sixteen to twenty books—novels, short stories, poetry, and literary essays.

ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP
An internship at Coffee House Press will introduce you to all aspects of a small literary publisher, and will give you skills that can also easily transfer to larger publishing houses and other careers, both in the arts and elsewhere.

INTERN TASKS
Reading and reporting on submissions
Manuscript fact-checking
Proofreading
Acquisitions and permissions research
Filing and other assorted administrative duties (such as answering phones and taking messages)
Researching donor and grant prospects
Database upkeep, including spreadsheets and database software
Writing copy for newsletters, reading group guides, and the CHP website
Coordinating and assisting with mailings (galleys, press releases, catalogs, etc.)
Assisting with upkeep of publicity materials
Light page layout and editing of press materials, signs, and other documents
Providing support before and during events
Assisting with direct sales in the office and at events
Website maintenance
Other tasks as assigned

Internship hours are flexible, averaging 12–15 hours per week over the course of approximately four months for a total of at least 200 hours. At the completion of the internship, interns receive a $1,200 stipend, $200 worth of discounted Coffee House titles, and a discount on all future purchases. Internships are intended as fixed-length, educational experiences and should not be interpreted as job training. Interns are not entitled to or guaranteed employment upon the completion of the internship, but they are welcome to apply for open positions at the press at any time. Please note that the internship takes place at our Minneapolis office and cannot be done remotely.

Hi, everyone! Long time no post. I am doing ok -- more on me later, because here is an AWESOME fic:

Counting Ants by awanderingbard. Sherlock and Molly friendship; they talk while, literally, counting ants. Spoilers for Series 3. It is marvelous! Very true to the characters, sweet and funny. You will feel good after reading it!

(There are a few typos and word substitutions; the fic is wonderful enough to ignore them.)

First of what I'm sure will be many, many recs.

The vid for me! Always on My Mind, I Love You Phillip Morris. SO GREAT. Whether you've seen the movie or not, if you like scams and love and heart-felt zaniness*, you will like the vid. It's a great teaser for the movie without major spoilers. And I adore it. Plus if you can watch the vid without wanting to snuzzle Phillip's cute wittle face, well, comment and tell me how.

(*Just this second realized that this is my issue with Ben Stiller; his zaniness always seems to be missing heart)

A more serious and equally as heartfelt vid: The Waiting Game, The Station Agent (2003). Ooh, lovely job capturing this found-family, who-am-I-and-what-do-I-want film.

9 to 5, Lego Star Wars. Hilarious! As such_heights said, "I love everything this chooses to be." (Also, listen closely to the lyrics of the song. Dolly Parton's talking about what capitalism does to us.)

Sheep Go to Heaven, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. If you like the band Cake, I think you'll like this vid. It's charming. Even if you don't know the source (which I didn't), as long as you watched US TV in the 90s/00s you'll recognize the actors. :)

Nine Years of Ballet, ASSHOLE!, Outrageous Fortune (US 1987). As the anonymous vidder says, "how jetés and stage combat saved the world." This is a "source summary" vid, and a great one. You'll enjoy the story even if you've never heard of the movie.

So here is a great vid from last year to get us started! It is about TEAM, which I know you all love. Never seen the movie but I cared about the people in the vid from the first few moments \o/

The lovely line drawing "Happy Birthday, Sherlock Holmes" features six versions of Holmes (including Dr. Greg House and Basil). And exactly who would be wishing Holmes/House a happy birthday? That's right; the six Watson/Wilson/Dawson bffs. ♥ ♥ ♥

OH MY GOD I CAN'T BELIEVE IT

Festivids just opened and I was given THREE utterly AMAZING Dead Poets Society vids. THREE, and they are all different, and they are all AMAZING. You must go watch, and marvel, and comment!!! Now!!!

First, see Smokin' in the Boys Room, which is a very happy DPS vid. I hadn't thought it possible, but THERE IT IS. Awesome. Huge smile guaranteed.

Next, watch Measuring Cups, and be moved by the challenge of finding yourself in a world that's already slotted you.

And end with I Was Meant for the Stage, because oh, Neil. Oh, Neil. (Heed the content notes.)

Here's a bit of fun for a Monday morning!

Rumrouz shows the freedom and release of dancing when you're "not supposed to." I would've liked to see more large people dancing, but when you're working with major media your sources are limited.

Strong rec for this multi-source fanvid Safety Dance

It's rude to say 'I told you so,' but I totally told you how awesome [livejournal.com profile] bironic's Starships vid was, and now it is available for your viewing pleasure! If you are one of the few who haven't seen it yet, go here and have fun.

You're welcome. ♥

[livejournal.com profile] bironic finished a vid this weekend. Actually, she finished the vid this weekend, and I got a chance to beta (critiques = zero), and YOU GUYS.

YOU GUYS.

YOU GUYS, YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE MISSING BY NOT HAVING SEEN THIS VID YET.

But you will. In August, after it premieres at Vividcon.

OK, ladies and gents, I am going to have to insist you listen to this extended interview with Hugh Laurie. He's a delightful, intelligent person, and it's so fascinating to hear his thoughts. He is also a weirdo, as this interview brings out, in the best possible way. Some of you may be particularly interested to hear his thoughts on pain -- in general, House's, and HL's own.

Marykir documented it, and sheppa posted it to RSL-Daily, so thank you to both of them.

Get the link here.

Fresh Air 25 Apr 2012 39:27 radio interview with Hugh, almost entirely about House.

As Marykir says: "Includes clips from previous episodes, Hugh reading a bit from The Gun Seller, and a clip from Blackadder. There is a spoilerish moment ~10-11min into the interview. If you skip that minute, I think the rest is safe..."

My mind (and other parts of my body) keep going back to this fic, which is a good indicator that I should mem it (done) and rec it.

NC-17 like whoa, Embarrassed of Nothing by Mercy, House/Wilson (like whoa), body fetish, indulgence in fantasy, no violence. Might not be to everyone's taste, but if it is to your taste... Mmm. This line from the fic captures the mood: "Wilson has a very limited collection of sexual deviances, though he keeps it closely guarded, well-dusted and largely untouched. Most are still in their original boxes. It's always nice when he lets House take one out to play with."
