To me, more than pumpkin spice, autumn means apples.

1. Have you ever bobbed for Apples?

Only once or twice. It was a regular feature of books I read growing up so I expected to do it a lot more than I actually have. It's difficult to do! The shape of apples and the texture of their skin make it difficult to grab them with your teeth. Bobbing for plums would be easier but probably messier.

My favorite time bobbing for apples was when I was 20, and a guy I had a major crush on bobbed for apples in his white pirate shirt, which quickly became a clear, clingy pirate shirt. Yum, and I don't mean the apples.

2. Do you like a regular or hard apple cider?

I like both. My biggest issue with cider is when it is too natural and has ... well, in orange juice you'd call it pulp, not sure what it's called in cider. A nice strained cider is best.

3. Do you have a special type of apple that you prefer over others?

Not Red Delicious is my favorite kind.

4. Have you ever made baked apples?

Not myself, but I really enjoy eating them with others make them. I also enjoy caramel apples; such a delicious taste together.

5. Who is the apple of your eye?

The two apples of my eye (one for each eye?) are my two kids. The younger turns fourteen today; the older is getting ready to apply to college/university.

[personal profile] spikesgirl58 asked:

With the start of Autumn just a few days away in this hemisphere and Spring about to start in the other –

1. Do you have the urge to do a Fall/Spring cleaning as soon as the weather turns?

No for Fall, but yes for Spring. Opening up the windows after winter lets in a freshness that makes the rest of the house feel stale. I'm not a very good deep cleaner (fortunately I can hire someone for that) but I love to organize and dust.

2. What tells you that the season (a certain smell, a certain taste, that sort of thing) has changed?

It used to be the weather, but lately the weather at season-change-time has been very ... unseasonable. Now, amusingly, it's often the changing of the meme on Tumblr or Twitter that gets me excited about a season change.

3. What do you look forward to the most with the change of seasons?

The feeling of newness, and of motion. Things aren't staying the same.

4. What is something that you probably should accomplish but won’t this season?

Normally I'd have a firm answer for that, but this time, I'm feeling optimistic that expectation and reality will be in sync. Either I'll get things done or I'll acknowledge why not and adjust.

5. What is the most enjoyable part of the oncoming season for you?

The weather and the outdoor activities. For the most part I'm an air-conditioned-environment kind of gal, but in this area in the fall, it's a great time to be out.

This Friday Five is brought to you by Hurricane Florence and [personal profile] anais_pf.

1. Have you ever experienced a hurricane firsthand?

Yes, a few times. Growing up in South Florida, they happened often enough that hurricane preparedness was a standard part of the science curriculum every year.

2. Have you ever experienced outside heat over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celcius)?

Yes, often. The hottest was in Scottsdale, Arizona, at 113 degrees Fahrenheit. But Florida at 100 is worse than Arizona at 113 because of the humidity.

3. When and where was the coldest temperature you have ever experienced?

Where/when was probably Massachusetts in the late 80s/early 90s. I don't know how cold it was but I've definitely been outside in the negative degrees Fahrenheit. (Negative 20 or so Celsius)

4. Is your household prepared for a possible power outage of two to seven days?

Yes! We have supplies and also generators.

5. Do you have a go bag?

No, but I should.

PS. A friend of mine from camp (aaaages ago) was from Florence, South Carolina. I hope his family is ok in Florence the city during Florence the Hurricane.

1) If you could be either a fish or a bird, which would you be, and why?

A bird, because living underwater sounds claustrophobic to me. I suppose it isn't for the fish, but that's how I'm feeling today. :)

2) Would you rather it be 10 degrees too hot or 10 degrees too cold? (Does your answer change if that’s indoors or outdoors?)

They both are more unpleasant than I want to deal with, but I'd have to say too cold. When I get too hot, I get Hulk-levels of angry. Not good.

3) What is the best thing that happened to you today?

Best thing on Friday: Had a work meeting outside in the shade.
Best thing today: Met up with some fun people, and got to explain something to them. I adore explaining things to people, providing knowledge that reduces confusion or makes someone's life easier.

4) Is youth wasted on the young? (Follow-up: are you old or young?)

I don't think life and energy are wasted on anyone, so would have to say no to this. This question made me think of a great word: insouciant, which means effortless, without concern. "He’s long and lean, supple, with the insouciant potency of youth."

5) Pasta salad or potato salad?

Pasta salad, because potato salad is a huge NO for me. Just can't eat it. No matter how good the recipe, how skilled the cook -- I can't do it.

Well, that makes ‘sense’ to me

1. Is there a smell that will immediately sicken you?

Several smells make me uneasy (such as mulch). The one time I was immediately sickened by a smell, to the point of almost vomiting, was a batch of health-food cookies I had baked from The What to Eat When You're Expecting book. My husband had to seal them off and then throw them away. I never cooked anything else from that horrible book, which was also the most anxiety-inducing read ever.

2. When you want quiet, where do you go?

My bedroom, ah. Or sometimes to the mall or a grocery store, which is not silent but is not producing noise that requires something from me, as happens often at home.

3. Do you need/prefer total darkness when you sleep?

Yes please! Sometimes I need it so much I'll sleep with a t-shirt wrapped around my head (most eye masks are made of fabrics that aren't breathable enough for me).

4. What is your least favorite taste?

Licorice. Marzipan. Bruised fruit.

5. How heavily do you rely upon your sense of touch?

Not much.

Would you rather [entertainment version]...
1. Download music // buy a CD

At this point, download music because I don't need the clutter in my house of CDs. But I will say that I loved album covers and liner notes and the will-they-won't-they of whether lyrics would be included. The "additional" stuff that you don't always get with a download.

I don't miss the way cassette tapes could snarl or snap, though.

2. Use MP3 player // Use CD Player

Neither? Almost all my music gets played from multi-use devices these days (phone, computer, stereo receiver receiving music via wifi or broadband).

3. Watch a movie at a theater // Rent a video

Oh, this is both. Although it's expensive, the big recliners in my local movie theater (and a realization that Dolby/3D/Imax are detriments to my personal experience rather than pluses) have me enjoying the cinema again. But there is also so much that's blissful about sitting on the couch at home.

4. Amusement park for the day // Picnic in a park for a day

AMUSEMENT PARK. I like my outdoor experience curated for me (something I just crystallized in my mind at this very moment).

5. Read a magazine // Dollage with a magazine

I don't know what dollage is (just realized it's a misspelling of "collage" rather than an actual thing, which is disappointing, there should be a cool craft called dollage ((rhyming with collage))), but I really love reading magazines. I used to be a cover-to-cover gal, even reading the table of contents and the author/editor bio snippets, but have along the way lost my stamina. Alas. It's still my favorite type of reading for airplanes, doctor's offices, nail salons/hairstylists.
