Speculation for ep 5-10 and after: I think Wilson is going to undergo Living Donor Liver Transplantation (LDLT) to save the POTW. "The donor's liver will regenerate approaching 100% function within 4–6 weeks and will almost reach full volumetric size with recapitulation of the normal structure soon thereafter," says Wikipedia, so the House team will use the six-week hiatus to be able to totally skip the "Wilson recovering" stage and the first ep in January will have him back to normal (or almost normal).

And for those concerned that RSL might use this to seek a permanent path back to full-time Broadway: "Death after LDLT has been reported at 0% (Japan), 0.3% (USA) and <1% (Europe), with risks likely to improve further as surgeons gain more experience in this procedure."

Your thoughts?

In unrelated news, who's going to buy Wilson the Mangroomer for Xmas?

I thought maybe House would come up with a last-minute alternative diagnosis/treatment for the patient like RIGHT before they cut into Wilson or something, cue big dramatic surgery-interrupting scene :) Maybe even figure out that Wilson's old friend is terminal with some other disease, idk. I sort of hope that doesn't happen, 'cause...<3 Wilson <3

House does love to interrupt surgeries! Heh.

Actually, the first thing I thought when I saw the promo was of course the POTW has a loving and devoted woman plastered to his side, because otherwise there'd be too much speculation about what kind of "friends" Wilson was with him.

And of course I'm going to speculate anyway.

<3 Wilson <3

<3 you <3

How you doing?

Hee well I assumed it was the liver right off as well, because y'know, if it was a kidney, there's dialysis, and there aren't a lot of organs a live donor could give that couldn't be compensated by a machine, at least for a while.

ALSO I ASSUMED RIGHT OFF THAT THIS IS WILSON'S ~SPECIAL~ COLLEGE FRIEND AND PRACTICALLY HAVE THE FIC ALREADY WRITTEN ;D

But, ouch. I hope so much that he doesn't have to go through another it's-impossible-to-save-this-person-you-care-about thing. *But* I mean with spoilers for the next ep after this...:(

I'm trying to think if they've ever shown time passing from the winter hiatus before this....doesn't it usually sort of pick up where it left off? IDK.

<3 YOU <3

I'm good. I should do an update post :) I'm planning on doing a major domestic fic-drop this week sometime though ;)

w00t for domestic fic! ♥ ♥ ♥

I was noodling around with something in the MFS-verse but never finished it.

I can't recall if they've elapsed time or not in winter hiatus, but then again I think this is the longest winter hiatus they've had.

what kind of "friends" Wilson was with him.

Do you think it's amusing that this never would have occurred to me?

I just thought, well, that's Wilson for you; if someone you care for is dying, he believes that naturally you'll risk your own life to save theirs.

I don't think it would occur to most people. : ) But the show has a serious complex about showing men having affection with each other (and about men and women being platonic friends for that matter) so it sometimes seems to me that the show very blatantly butches up the het cred because they can't deal with the thought of men being intimate with each other. Not necessarily in a sexual way, but in an emotional way.

Eh, that's what fanfic is for.

And yet this is the same show that gives us a main character who, when there's a whole sofa to be had, sits close enough to touch his BFF. And steals his food all the time, and deletes messages from landlords to keep him as a roomie, and ... I know what you mean, but it is weird, isn't it, how schizoid they are about it? They tend to keep to the make-a-joke-of-it side of things instead of allowing us to see what's beneath the joking.

Except when they do; that fight in Birthmarks was, I thought, intensely intimate.

Well, I'm amused. It's... the first and only thing that occurred to me. Also, yay, WW guy!

Dee, if you're right I would be bouncing off the walls with joy. I mean, I'm already ridiculously enthused about the promo... XD

What I want to know is why it's Wilson, and not the friend's Devoted Woman, who does this. Probably there will be some medical reason why she can't do it? Positive for hepatitis or something; who knows.

She's not a match but Wilson is, I'd suppose.

Wilson's a universal donor, remember? *g*

That clip looks GREAT. It's pretty choppy for me, though, so I'm going to watch it again later.

Eh, it won't let me see it. But never mind, more suspense for later! XD

ALSO, I BELIEVE HE IS NOT AND HAS NEVER BEEN KNOWN AS 'JIM', WRITER PERSON. DOES THIS LOOK LIKE A STARSHIP TO YOU? DOES IT?????

Yay for wine! As Chase would say, cheers ;)

edit: Huh, now it works for me. And now I get the Jim thing. Ooo-kay. Seriously, there is way too much lulz in that three minutes to even get my head around. Action!RSL oh, dear. Guitar playing, oh dear. Will stop spamming now :)

Hee, was thinking of you tonight because I'm drinking wine.

Did you see that the first three minutes of the next episode are on-line? IDK if folks outside the US can see it.

Okay, that's looking fairly epic.

And they couldn't be feeding the slashers any more if they tried. Good grief, that song House is singing. And he's making further efforts to establish his territory at Wilson's; and he's jealous; and ... on a totally unrelated note, WILSON IN CAMO! Hee!

ETA that I have no idea how "matching" is done for donor organs; is it by blood type?

:-D

I think matching is by blood type but I'm not sure that's the only qualifier.

Organ matching is usually done by blood type *and* HLA (human leukocyte antigen) type. HLAs are tissue antigens on the donor organ which, if they're "foreign" (i.e. not the same as the recipient's), will be detected by the recipient's T lymphocytes. This causes an immune reaction cascade that ends with the recipient rejecting the organ, and is why the recipient must take immunosuppressants for the rest of his/her life.

There are 6 major HLA antigens that have to match the recipient's HLA antigens for the best results. The fewer the matches, the greater the chance the body will reject the organ. Or, if the recipient is already immune-suppressed before the transplant, the higher the chance the T lymphocytes in the donated organ will attack the recipient's body ("graft vs host" disease).

Remember the episode about the PotW who was going to donate bone marrow to his older sick brother, except the PotW got sick? They couldn't find a perfect marrow match from non-related donors? That's why.

The song is awesome. :D

Matching apparently depends on the organ type. It seems that liver requires only a blood-type match: http://www.unos.org/PoliciesandBylaws2/policies/pdfs/policy_8.pdf

I hate that song, and George Michael songs in general, and unless someone disproves it I am going to fanwank that so does Wilson. And that House knows this, which is why he chose that particular song, for maximum annoyance.

I think it is the 6:33 AM that is the maximum annoyance, not the song itself. Last season we had a "Cuddy's Serenade" (in the simchat bat episode); I like "Wilson's Serenade" much better. :DDD

The irony of Joshua Malina playing a character who hunts after his turn in Sports Night is so delicious I want to spread it on toast.
