Last year, Mr. L and I watched the recent Watchmen series starring Regina King, and were blown away by its magnificence.

Today Festivids opened and there is a Watchmen vid set to the song "Nothing Is Safe" by clipping. The vid reminded me how great and fearsome the series is, and reminded me how I felt watching.

Nothing is safe in America, and I need to continue to grapple with, continue to push myself to fully accept that it was my family, my culture that made it that way. Those villains I see on the screen, who were real, who actually perpetrated that evil? They were doing it for me.

I don't have to exploit the inheritance they left for me, but I do have to understand they wanted me to have it. I do have to stand next to Black people, and Indigenous people, and all other people of color, and acknowledge that they're seeing the past and the present correctly.

Until we White people can do that en masse, and shun the individuals who choose not to, nothing is safe.

Reached one of my two 2020 goals:

I got a good job!

I started this week at a small consulting company, working on a federal contract in my field. <3 <3 <3 The health insurance is mega-expensive (it's a small company in the US, so of course) but the pay is even a little more than I was aiming for and they contribute to 401K retirement.

I am also, for the first time in three decades, an hourly worker so no unpaid evening/weekend work!

It's been a looooong, sad-sack-y twenty months of unemployment, y'all. So glad to be back in the working world.

So... yeah

After months of looking I found a therapist in my area who has evening hours \o/ We had the first appointment and at first blush we might be compatible (although she talks a lot more than I expected).

I told her one problem I'm having is feeling disconnected from time, and she responded that it's a classic symptom for depression. Oh. Oh.

I hadn't realized those two were connected but it does make quite a lot of sense. Haven't translated that into action yet, but it was interesting to learn.

We talked a lot about not being too hard on yourself; next time (in late July, because she's going to London with her best friend to see Adele, which she apologized for (for not being available) but frankly made me like her better) I want to get more into what IS a reasonable standard to hold myself to. Autistic inertia is a real thing, and I need to figure out how far out I can put the "On" switch so as not to burn myself out long-term.

Here is a good thing that I’m happy about:

The elementary school my younger son (Littlest Laundry) goes to treats him like an individual. \o/ He had a meltdown Friday and ended up hitting a teacher and two students. The school’s first priority was keeping him (and the others) safe and finding a way to help him calm down. Then they talked with me and my husband about the best next steps. The school district’s code is strict about consequences for physical violence (as it should be) but the principal, teachers, and counselor knew that my son’s violence wasn’t malicious. So they came up with a consequence for him that is fair given the circumstances. I feel blessed.

PS. Yes, the rumors are true, [personal profile] bironic and I did see RSL in Camelot. It was fun! More on that later.

Interviewed for a new job and was asked about my international experience. I immediately thought of all the lovely people all over the world I’ve met through fandom, LJ/DW, and Tumblr.

However, I refrained from talking about all the porn we’ve shared with each other through the years. *hugs hugs hugs*

PS. I got the job.

PPS. I already told them I'm taking Friday, July 29 off for "a personal day." Again, not mentioning that I'm going to Con-Txt and modding a panel on how to write sex scenes featuring more than two characters.

PPPS. Assuming that panel got voted in.

Whee!

Tomorrow night I am going to go see an actual movie, non kid-related, in an actual movie theater!  This has not happened for... many years.  When did [Poll #1231720]

I've decided:  House and Wilson are like cake and frosting, respectively.

People don't say, "I want some frosting"; they say, "I want a piece of cake."  And some people don't even like frosting on their cake -- they prefer their cake plain, or with a glaze, or a fruit topping.

Me, I follow the crowd and say, "I want cake," and when I get some, that first bite with both is always amazing.  They're just so good together.

But really I'm in it for the frosting.  Sometimes I don't eat all of the cake part, but I always eat the frosting and savor every bit.  When no one's looking, I steal more frosting off the serving tray.  There are even those secret evenings alone, when I give in to my heart's desire and have frosting straight from the can.  It's a little shameful, because everyone knows you're only supposed to have frosting on cake (or the occasional cookie).  I just can't resist, though -- it gives me too much bliss.

Namasteyoga interviewed me over at [profile] housefic_meta.

Pop on over if you want to read my rambling, or ask me a question about writing, or throw popcorn.

AT NO TIME DID I USE THE WORD 'CRAFT.'
