Which we already knew, but here's why I say that for this episode:

"[Amber] was the only person I've loved for a long time."

LIAR! Liar, liar, pants on fire.

Part of me wants canon slash, and the other part of me wants this show to ACKNOWLEDGE THAT FRIENDS CAN LOVE EACH OTHER. Yes, even two dudes! Even two dudes who are not related through biology or adoption and not sleeping together!

What in the freaking world do you call the level of intimacy and devotion that House and Wilson have, if not love?

He's also a thief who re-gifts, but that's another story all together.

I'm with you - acknowledge that friends can love each other! Even if it's in their own screwed up way, make it obvious enough that we don't have to fanwank it. And make sure they're both conscious and present for it.

I mean seriously! I don't know what is up TPTB's butt that they can't have it said. Not every episode. not holding hands and skipping through fields of daisies, but c'mon. They especially need to have Wilson get off his ass and say something concrete to House. Romantic love is not the only love there is, Wilson!

Absolutely...I Love my best girl friend to pieces!
So I know exactly what you mean!

PLUS while we are on the topic of Wilson lying...
This is what I didnt get...

Didn’t Wilson move away…come back and get a new apartment…? Why did he say he still lives in Amber’s apartment and everything is where it was?

Wilson left PPTH but he never moved out of the apartment. When House goes to see Wilson in episode 2, the walls behind Wilson are that same teal-green of Amber's apartment. Also Wilson said in the episode where he came back to PPTH that he had found a job at "Mercer" -- Mercer is the name of the county Princeton is in.

I know that it's much harder for men to say out loud that they love each other, but c'mon! House has said that Wilson loves him; it's time for Wilson to say it!

*to play devils advocate*

What if it is a true statement? I mean when is the last time we saw Wilson act liked he did in fact *love* House? (just as his best friend)... before Twitter? -- that was at least more than a year (or two?) ago show time so that is a long time to not have loved anyone.

I dunno if you take the hypothesis that Wilson doesn't love House like he once did it makes more sense that he'd latch onto Amber and be so emotional over someone he dated for 4 months

I like Devil's Advocate, so awesome.

I think Wilson coming back to Princeton-Plainsboro showed that he loves House. He had a new job; he had already "broken up" with House; there was no real reason to come back. It was because he loved House. (And I'm still pissed that the show had him come back without discussing the issues raised in Dying Changes Everything, but I'll get over that.)

I know! It is very difficult for a lot of men to say that, and Wilson and House are both more screwed up than typical men (I bet Kutner could tell a friend he loved him), but arrrrggggh, I just feel sometimes like the whole show is set up around this idea that romantic love and parental love are the only two kinds of love!

I took it more as the only person he's ~*~allowed~*~ himself to love for a long time, because loving House has gotten him hurt in the past. (Even though it's like the best thing in his life, right? Geez). Either way, that statement only bugged me for a second, because no matter what he says, you don't get a relationship like theirs, with that kind of devotion, without love.

While I do see what you mean by: "What in the freaking world do you call the level of intimacy and devotion that House and Wilson have, if not love?

I take this line to mean the only (female/girlfriend) Wilson's loved for a very long time. I wouldn't include my female best friend in a statement like that. There are many types of love, but their's is not romance like with Amber. Just my humble opinion.

I'm not fussing at Wilson. I'm fussing at the writers who keep dropping the ball on having Wilson verbally acknowledge what House means to him, and who seem to continually put forth the idea that romantic love is the only kind of love worth having.

They could have had Wilson say, "I loved her deeply, with all my heart," and it would have had the same poignancy within the scene.

I thought Amber was wonderful for Wilson. I loved their romance. I also loved that House was determined that his claim on Wilson's time and attention would be taken just as seriously.

Dude's dense, yep. I want the show to quit making him dense. I mean, c'mon, in Son of a Coma Guy, Wilson's the one talking all about unconditional love, but he won't say anything directly to House?

RSL said in TV Guide during an interview on House and Wilson, "Why is everyone so obsessed with homosexuality?" Two reasons: (1) House and Wilson having sex would be hot; and (2) as a society we have an extremely hard time acknowledging that any love other than romantic or familial love exists.

This is a sore spot for me, as you might have guessed.

I didn't see the episode, but, based on this, yeah...I understand, show, that romantic love is important (and it is), but it's not the only love, and sometimes not the most enduring love or most satisfying love. It can be, but platonic love is not "second best" by any means.

I should probably reserve most of my judgments for later, though, not having seen this yet. Meh. I just can't resist jumping in.

That actually didn't bother me, because at that moment I don't think Wilson would parse his feelings and play semantics. I have no doubts he loves House intensely; he also loves Cuddy, IMO and I'm sure his brothers and his parents and maybe even others.

But at that moment I think he meant he was IN LOVE with Amber, and she was the first in a long time. He wouldn't be thinking about who else he loves, period, but just that Amber was the first romantic love in a long time (and I say that as a H/W shipper). He wouldn't say, "Amber was the first person I loved in a long time, romantically, of course I love other people," etc. His emotions were just spilling out at that moment.

(Points to poorfrances' comment) What she said. As for Wilson never saying "I love you" to House, why does he need to? House clearly already knows; actually I love that House, so cynical and suspicious of others' affection, is so confident that Wilson loves him.

I think it was first and foremost TPTB's fault. There always, always is the sentiment on the show that House will die alone if he doesn't find a romantic partner to share his life with, that a friend can't be "as much as" a lover.

I know that's the majority view of our society but I'm tired of it.

Totally agreeing with [livejournal.com profile] poorfrances.

He was speaking of what's got him in a rut now, and that one thing that's got him in a rut is Amber's death. He's still stuck in the now of that death, so much so that he couldn't move on enough to wash out a coffee mug.

I'm of the group that thought Wilson was talking about romantic love, as opposed to friendship love, and that was his context for approaching the idea of using the word. I don't doubt House and Wilson love each other, but I don't think Wilson has the ability to say that in so many words.

Personally, the jokes about House and Cuddy's cycles matching up and the locker room quip really had me going, but things like that make me puzzled when other people talk about "shout outs" - I know there are maybe fifteen other people who'd find those even remotely funny for the same reasons that I do.

The show has always had timeline problems, and I think that's what happened with Wilson & Amber's relationship. TPTB wanted to hurry things up, so they compressed what would have taken several more months to develop in the real world into like a month. Ding dongs.

When I heard Wilson say that I went "WHAT?!" and then immediately started to think my way round it (like all of us, lol).

My conclusion was that he was talking to a patient so simplified it (and having read the comments, I like [livejournal.com profile] poorfrances's thought that he was referring to someone he was 'in love' with).

TPTB could have so easily fixed it by changing it to 'the only woman'. Pah.

Actually, without watching the episode, I should probably just STFU, but I was talking with an online friend who describes for me all the H&W scenes right after the episode ends in US and I just told her how happy I was that Wilson’s line wasn’t: ‘OMG! I just lost the LOVE OF MY LIFE and I can’t move on…’ Really, that would have being awful!

I got what you’re saying about romantic love taking precedence on the show, but the thing is, none of the romantic relationships seem to go to a happy place, ever. It’s the friendship between House and Wilson that is tested over and over and this must mean something. What, I don’t know...
