deelaundry: man reading in an airport with his face hidden by the book (RSL)
[personal profile] deelaundry
Here is a post in which I criticize the public statements of certain actors.

Lisa Edelstein has complained about fans harassing boyfriends of hers, because the fans want her to be with Hugh Laurie instead. That is a more than fair complaint, and any fans doing that need a life, and probably psychiatric attention.

With that said, she needs to stop egging people on by talking about how do-able she finds Hugh Laurie. The latest is an Ausiello interview in which she "jokes" about showing Hugh herself naked and asking which parts she needs to tone up in case they have a sex scene together (even though, as she says, the parts won't be seen on TV).

Such talk makes you sound like a person of loose morals, dear.

Lest you think I only scorn women for acting like horndogs, Robert Sean Leonard similarly grossed me out during an old interview, in which he said he enjoyed rehearsing for The Music Man with the chorus because the teenaged girls were hot. Ew, dude. Some thoughts should stay in your head.

Yeah, those are some less-than-classy moments, all right.

Any other things you'd care to snipe about tonight? It's about 10 below outside and I don't have a lot else to do.

Some people really do need to keep thoughts in their heads. Or, if, in Lisa's case, she's actually saying those things in rehearsals/on set, then she needs to keep that sort of thing professional and private. Heh.

It goes without saying there are many many women (and many men too) who find Hugh doable. But I'd think Jo Laurie would have something to say about Lisa's quip.

(Is it me, or is the stupid quotient pushing the limit in fandom today?)

I find LE's behavior in interviews to be sad. She drapes herself on HL and RSL rather desperately, and both of them are visibly uncomfortable with it.

RSL needs to never speak in public. He's really good at the whole stick foot in mouth thing. Sometimes it's entertaining, more often it's cringe worthy.

I'm not a big LE fan(I know, blasphemy, but she bugs me, can't pinpoint why) and I don't like her OTT gushing about HL. The constant talk about how hot and sexy he is and she can't wait to have a sex scene with him: Totally disrespectful towards Jo, imo. JMo used to talk a lot like that too, she toned it down a lot, probably because she's being asked those question less now HAM seems to be off the radar.

Just my opinion and all that good stuff.

Oh, RSL. [livejournal.com profile] daasgrrl said he's on his own wavelength, and I totally agree with that.

LE and JMo have both shown how charming and lovely they can be during interviews. I don't mind them having done most of the talking after the PCAs, for example. But there have been interviews that just make me shake my head. What kind of atmosphere does the show production have, where your character having sex with House is the most important thing for you to strive for? That wouldn't make you Queen of the show.

In the less than classy dept, I also had a beef with an interview done with Edelstein, but it was more the interviewer's fault. It was in Bitch magazine and I thought, oh here we go, finally some tough questions about why a smart and independent dean of medicine needs to dress so, so ridiculously trashy! But instead they spent the entire interview talking about Laurie's bum.

...way to roll, post-feminist world.

I just wrote above, and will copy here: What kind of atmosphere does the show production have, where your character having sex with House is the most important thing for you to strive for? LE has talked about wanting that for Cuddy; JMo has talked about wanting that for Cameron; most female guest stars gush about their sexual chemistry with HL. Do they all have the impression that having sex with the lead character makes you Queen of the show? That is a sad state of affairs in sexual politics there.

Hm, well, while I agree that going so far OTT in description of herself and HL is definitely not the way to discourage the crazy stalker fans, I kind of agree with spoggly that whore is such a loaded word, you know? Not that I've never said similarly strong things when Using the Internet While Cranky before myself, of course. *g*

The interview did make me uncomfortable, though, in ways I had a hard time pinning down. It's a similar sort of feeling I get when I come across sexual RPF (no offense to those who like it, it just squicks me) or, for that matter, when the Cuddy strip scene aired. There's the gender aspect, that female actors are constantly asked the sex question and female characters on the show (who aren't 13) are only given major amounts of screentime when they're sexing it up with House. Then there's feeling awkward on the actresses' behalf that they're expected to do that sort of thing as part of their job, even though it doesn't really bother them as much. Then, as with RPF, I tend to get the creepy feeling that someone's real body is being exploited ostensibly for my entertainment. ...to get all, like, pseudo-intellectual in your LJ.

You probably read my other comments, so I won't repeat myself, but the fact that actresses seem to feel they have to play up their sexual attraction to the lead bothers me so badly.

I actually wrote an AU fic about it, in which American TV production had an official designation of "Star" for a TV show and the Star was always given a "Yeoman," a more junior actor, to fulfill whatever duties the Star deemed necessary. The Star and Yeoman designations are written into the actors' contracts, with the implicit understanding that the Yeoman will provide no-strings sex for the Star. An outsider comes in and thinks the whole thing is bizarre, but there's actually social capital to be gained from being a Yeoman, and they have their own network and grapevine, and a Star who refuses to have a Yeoman loses points socially.

I guess it's normal to want to link yourself to the star of the show -- Omar Epps had a photoshoot/article where they made kind of a big deal about his trailer being next to HL's -- but some of the comments cross the line for me. Hence this post.

I'd noticed that Lisa is always next to HL at the award shows, when he's not there with his wife. I wonder why they don't mix it up a little, have different people by him at different times.

... eep. There's some things that are okay to say, but the blatant, out-there stuff is just bad.

I hadn't realized RSL had said that -- RSL! Why? Just... be quiet and look pretty. That works for me.

LE sounds like she wants to have an affair with Hugh, and that's kind of crass, especially since Hugh's married, and it's not a big secret that he's married. *sigh*

RSL's quote is from a while ago, before House, and yeah, it's bad. Icky-perv-on-the-bus bad. Someone said he seems like he has no social filter, and I'd have to agree with that.

LE can be quite charming, but I really want her to get off that particular topic (and for Ausiello to quit bringing it up!). Makes her look so bad.

I think RSL is more unique than a moron. Or maybe he's just moronically unique. I loved the peoples' choice award thingie where suddenly Hugh looks around and goes 'where's Robert' - probably tied up in a closet (with a paper to read - the FOX monkeys aren't that cruel).

But maybe Lisa's comments stem from the whole show biz thing. Whole casts shoved into teeny tiny dressing rooms - and a lot of sharing. One amusing one was where one chick thought another chick's deordorant was hair spray.

There is much undressing and jokes (and maybe sex outside), but inside it's different. You can make the jokes, but nothing actually happens (unless it happens on the outside - which I doubt in this case).

That's just my take on those comments. But what I really want to know is 'the fans keep hounding her boyfriends'. That sounds a tad odd.
