[livejournal.com profile] spoggly did this meme (as did others), so I'm gonna.

Rules: Once you’ve been tagged, write an entry with 16 random things, facts, habits, or goals about you.

1. Re-purposing things makes me immensely happy.
2. I went to not one but two schools with condom-related mascots (Trojans and Jumbos).
3. I can't stand certain foods simply because of their texture.
4. I really want to ask my husband's cousin if I could watch him (the cousin) make out with his boyfriend.
5. One of my earliest memories of having sexual feelings was watching Three's Company at my great-aunt's house. Jack pretending to be gay really revved me up, although I had no idea how to handle those feelings and as a result just sat and watched the show. I didn't realize until recently that that's where my craving for slash started, way, way back then.
6. I like getting trophies and prizes for things I've done well. Sometimes I'd rather have a certificate than a cash bonus.
7. My childhood dream was to be an executive for a large corporation. I'm serious. Isn't that the most boring childhood dream ever? But it shaped how I thought about education, and what I studied in college, and the field I got into after college. None of which have much to do with what I'm doing for work now.
8. Sweet or sour? Sweet, sweet, sweet. Any day of the week and twice on Sunday.
9. I got a scholarship to preschool.
10. After I retire, I'd like to study education administration and open a school.
11. It was really stupid of me not to go into a technical career. I thought I should be "well rounded" but honestly, I'd be happier if I was spending more time with data, analysis, and systems.
12. Finding out about words is one of the most awesome things ever.
13. For myself, I don't really love learning per se, but I love knowing things.
14. The trees are so much easier for me than the forest.
15. Gallup StrengthsFinder is the best, most positive 'personality-typing' system I've ever tried. A lot of my self-dissatisfaction comes from the fact that I'm living in conflict with my strengths (Harmony, Significance, Analytical, etc.) instead of using them.
16. Hearing about other people's happy moments and accomplishments makes me happy. (Though I do roll my eyes at chiseling one's resume into granite.)

The condom-related mascots tickles me immensely.

And I think you'd make an awesome educational administrator.

Hee. And thank you. I think I'd be a middling-to-OK classroom teacher but would have a shot at being pretty decent at administration. Especially if it was the type of school I have in mind.

After I retire, I'd like to study education administration and open a school.

I'd vote for you if you ran for President of the Internet. Goodness knows it needs some education administering!

Finding out about words is one of the most awesome things ever.

LOL, here is something I discovered this week: the original meaning of explode was "to drive an actor off the stage with angry clapping" (from Latin ex "out" + plaudere "to clap").

education administering - LOL! Some people on the internet do need to get schooled, don't they? :D ♥

Oooooh, that is SO COOL about "explode." ♥ ♥ ♥ You are the awesomest ever.

1. Like what?
8. One of my 16 things would be that I often can't tell the difference between the two.
11. Hm. That's really interesting. I think there's a lot of pressure to be well-rounded, to develop and/or follow complementary skills, instead of to follow something you love or have been historically good at.
12. May I recommend Merriam-Webster's "Word of the Day" calendar? (I think it was M-W...) The vocab isn't always challenging, but on the back of each page there's etymology trivia.
13. That's a good distinction. I think I agree.
16. I noticed! :D

1. In general, re-purposing instead of consuming/creating new increases efficiency of resources, which is AWESOME. More specifically, #2-8 on this list are from memes I did before (a year or more ago). :D

11. There's a huge pressure within American society to be well-rounded, tied (I think) to individualism. You are supposed to be good at everything, because you're supposed to achieve all your goals by yourself. For literal-minded folks like me, it's a horrible trap.

12. w00t, Word of the Day! I love that feature on dictionary.com.

13. My husband and his best friends were kind of appalled when I said I didn't like learning, but eh. I do the learning, because I like knowing stuff, so what should it matter to them?

16. ♥ ♥ ♥

Re #1, you may be amused to know that the mat and backing board on the drawing I sent you -- and on all the Snow Emergency pieces -- is actually salvaged material. My mom works in a gallery and cuts the little mats from scrap that would otherwise have to be thrown out.

They can't even recycle the stuff because the mats aren't paper. They're museum mats, made of cotton.

I do hope that you can find ways to play more to your considerable strengths. You're so very, very bright.

I'm not amused; I'm impressed and pleased! I've always been drawn to your salvage art for two reasons: 1) it's always gorgeous; and 2) it's the ultimate in re-purposing.

About the strengths: I actually think I'm using them more in fandom than in real life. Gotta find a way to balance that out. *hugs*

1. Cool! I am horribly un-handy, but any mag that includes a skill level of "monkey" should work for me. :D

7. Seriously, I was 10. My goals were to carry a briefcase and sit at a desk and do *something* with papers and go to meetings. Snooze. And have a secretary and make a million-zillion dollars and fly in a private jet. OK, those last three were pretty cool.

The high school mascot fact made me laugh out loud.

And OMG, you're like my husband! He has very strong feelings about certain textures in food. Very strong feelings. He refuses to eat things that have an uneven, chunky kind of texture. Oatmeal. Applesauce. Cottage cheese. Even orange juice with pulp. Outright refuses. But that's okay. I have no texture issues (unless it's somehow slimy, like the seed parts of cucumbers, ew), so more of those things for me. Yum.

Opening a school sounds like such a great thing. Any particular kind of school?

About 16: I think that's great, hearing about other people's success. It can be very inspiring...until those people won't stop talking about their success, even if it's the self-celebratory flaily kind of talking. Then I want to shout, "Yay for you, but enough already!" I am such a buzzkill, I swear. LOL

Applesauce is fine, and baby oatmeal is fine, but regular oatmeal, cottage cheese, and OJ with pulp are not! I also can't do tapioca pudding or rice pudding, mashed potatoes (I like baked potatoes but have to be careful with my fork), or cooked onions.

Any particular kind of school? It's been too long since I've investigated education design to say intelligently, but it'll have a huge library right in the middle, a lot of natural light, excellent teachers, and an individualized curriculum for each student. ... Did I mention I plan to win several state lotteries simultaneously to pay for this?

About 16: You're absolutely right, of course. There's a point where it gets to be too much. But most of the people I know are too reluctant to say anything positive about themselves. Small steps and small happy moments should get a "woo hoo" too!

I totally agree about OJ with pulp. I used to tell my mother I wouldn't drink it because it had "thingies" *shudder*. I felt the same way about crunchy peanut butter, though I've mostly gotten past it.

I had to laugh because #5 reminded me of my first sexual feeling. It was the tv show The Streets of San Francisco and Michael Douglas french kissed a girl on the show (if i remember correctly, it was his real life girlfriend at the time). You could actually see him slip his tongue in her mouth. I'd never seen that before, I was like OMG what was that. I remember talking about it with my friend carolyn and we decided we needed to buy a dirty magazine to help us. So we went to a store, we called it the smoke shop, they sold everything. In between our rona barrett's and tigerbeats we slipped in an xrated magazine. The kid at the register was young and actually laughed but he still sold it too us.
AH, MEMORIES!
And I totally agree with #13, that's why I said in my 16 meme. I know a little about everything and a lot of nothing.

Memories! It's so funny to look back that far, when it was all new and a little weird and exciting. ♥

I know a little about everything and a lot of nothing.

Was it Socrates who said the wisest person is the one who knows he knows nothing? My social studies teacher in middle school said he wasn't going to teach us any information; he was going to teach us how to find information, because that was the most useful. : )

TYVM!

On another forum, there was an argument over the meaning of "drabble," and someone protested that there wasn't a set usage because "drabble" wasn't in the dictionary. To which, my awesome friend Sauty said, "No, it isn't, but 'neologism' is."

YAY WORDS!

Your no 5 is the one that gave me pause for thought. It took House (& Wilson) to make me realise my craving for slash, but I've been remembering how when I was a kid it was a family joke that anybody I liked on TV turned out to be gay. And I've started to realise why the Chandler/Joey scenes on Friends were always my favourites :)

Ooh, Chandler/Joey was awesome, but my absolute favorite was the episode where Ross and Joey started taking naps together. So cuddly! Joey the tempter and Ross powerless to resist. Male physical affection, the last taboo. :D

re 3, I really don't like pastry or breaded stuff (like fish fingers) unless the pastry/coating is soggy - I don't like them crispy. I was very popular at my primary school because we were given fish fingers every Friday and they were very soggy indeed - I was one of the only people that liked them that way :D

I'm definitely with you on 12 - I love finding out about words (and I love languages in general).
