Title: After the Fourth Wedding, part 4 of 4
Author: Dee Laundry
Pairing: House/Cameron
Rating: PG
Summary: Six linked drabbles (600 words exactly)

Part One - Part Two - Part Three

At thirty-six weeks, Immunology throws her a baby shower. Chase wanders in from the ICU for a quick hug and cake, then wanders back out.

She's opening the second present when House comes in and sits next to her. "Sorry I'm late," he says. "Patient."

They all stare at the impostor; he shrugs. "Cake, presents, and singing Drusilla's praises, what's not to like?" Cameron smiles at their daughter's "prenatal" name and hands him another gift, wrapped in diaper-clad ducks. House eyes it warily but picks at the tape.

The crocheted cane gets a place of honor over the baby’s crib.

"I win."

Wilson’s pose is familiar, from a deep, distant memory. Cameron frowns until it emerges: third grade, when winning at four-square made you ruler of the whole world.

She's out of their eyesight, but sees both of them perfectly. House's eyes hold confusion; he's got the same memory imprint but hasn't puzzled it out. He seems to know what’s behind the words, though.

"You're happy. Don't try to deny it, because you can't. You're happy, which means I win." Wilson is gloating, grinning.

House's head is down; he can't say a thing. Because Wilson is ruler of the world.

Elizabeth Cameron House makes her intentions known at seven a.m. and presents herself to the world at a very polite eight p.m. Near-fisticuffs with the obstetrician forgotten, House looms over the OB nurses as they check her out, trying to direct the action, until the shortest one shoves him back.

“Go hold your wife’s hand,” she orders, and to Cameron’s great surprise, he does. He tells her how proud he is, and when Elizabeth is brought over, they both reach out. Cameron cuddles her close, and when House says, “I love you,” it doesn’t matter which of them he means.

At six weeks old, Elizabeth's sleeping schedule stabilizes, and Cameron finally feels like she can think again. Enough to get some chores done, at least.

She's thrilled to check the final name off the thank-you note list, until she notices someone's missing. Damn.

"I’m writing baby gift thank-you’s. Why can’t I remember what Wilson gave us?”

House looks up. "It was months ago; I already thanked him."

"But what was it?”

House’s eyes have returned to the journal. “This house. Five percent of it, anyway. I’m not sure whether Allison knows, so don’t mention it.”

Cameron goes back to bed.

“You love Wilson,” Cameron whispers as House slides into bed next to her. He demolishes her defenses with his gaze.

“Yes.”

She ducks her head. “We should get divorced.”

“Why?”

“Because –”

“Do you love your father?”

“Yes.”

And you love me. My relationships with Wilson and with you are different things. It’s not a zero-sum game.”

“You’d save Wilson first from a burning building.”

“I’d save Elizabeth first. And yet you still want to be married to me.”

“That’s different.”

“Not unless you make it so. I’m with you because you make me happy.”

That it's true is enough.

He hardly ever tells her she’s pretty any more.

He tells her she’s raising a headstrong girl who will never know her place.

He works late – and goes off with Wilson for hours – more than she likes, but he drops everything to stay home with Elizabeth when she’s sick.

He tells her she works too much. He tells her she’s stubborn, and irritating, and mystifying, until the middle of the night, in the middle of their bed, when he can only choke out happy incoherent syllables.

He hardly ever tells her she’s pretty.

She likes it much better this way.

How the story ends so often depends on when the story ends. If you're satisfied with this ending, stop. If not, go see the epilogue.

I really like this ending. Especially the second and the last drabbles. But... (continues on next page)

Thanks! This was going to be five drabbles, but #6 just seemed to be needed.

I have no idea why this and the epilogue showed up on my flist out of order...

Anyway, I like this a lot, and it rounds the story out well. The epilogue is definitely the "proper" ending, though XD

I'm waiting for a few House/Cam fans to come by; I'm dying to know what they think. Thanks!

I’m not sure whether Allison knows, so don’t mention it.

OK, I'm an idiot. I have no idea what this means.

Anyway, that's out of the way - this makes me feel very very unsettled, because I think it's great, and yet I hate the pairing. I just don't know what to think any more! It's very well-written, though. I do like it.

OK, I just got it. Sorry. Fool that I am.

Also, I'm in the middle of the epilogue now, so ignore everything I just said, because I love you.

I loved the last drabble. I think its the kindest House has been to Cam since it all began, esp his backhanded praise of her skills as a mother - very Housian.

As a H/Cam shipper, I suppose I should prefer this ending to the epilogue. But House seems more relaxed and free with his emotions and his acceptance of happiness in the epilogue, so I'd have to go with that one. There's a playfulness and joy to the final H/W exchange that I didn't get in any of the H/C ones (and I'm guessing House hasn't found someone to replace Friend!Wilson when Friend!Wilson became Lover!Wilson. So Jimmy doesn't have to compete with anyone for House's time/loyalty - that's good). I'm glad House is happy in both situations. Lucky man!

This has been an enjoyable experience for me - so glad I could be honest about my impressions of the characters and feel comfortable doing so. I don't think I've ever done that with a H/W shipper before!

Thanks, deelaundry!

ps - in your photo montage at the top of the page, who's the little boy Jack?

Thanks! I am most definitely a H/W shipper, but I wanted to explore a little bit about how House/Cameron could work. In some of the aspects of her personality (the writers really need to settle the hell down and make her consistent), I think she could have a strong relationship with House - once she's no longer reporting to him and has established herself separately I could definitely see them as friends... and, in the right circumstances, as lovers.

I tried to communicate some joy and fun times between House and Cameron (his faces at Mrs. W's cooking, the wine on the honeymoon, the crocheted cane) but I do see Cameron as a more serious person. Didn't Chase say in Hunting that she schedules her fun? Of course, he was teasing but there's something to that a little bit. House & Cameron also had a good time at the monster trucks, but since then she just hasn't seemed to relax. Wilson & House, on the other hand, laugh together more than anyone else on the show, so I guess that came through.

Not sure I'll write any more House/Cam but I've really enjoyed talking with you through comments. Hope we cross paths again. Thanks!

PS. Jack is the main character in My Fathers' Son (http://deelaundry.livejournal.com/7091.html), which is about House and Wilson's son as he grows up. It's PG, and I've been told non-H/Wers have liked it too. If you wanted to read, I would love your opinion.

Or were you asking who it's a picture of? It's actually Stephen Fry. : ) I was trying to find a baby picture of Hugh Laurie and failed, but I did find his good friend Mr. Fry.

I finally read My Father's Son and enjoyed it. I really liked the early chapters, the ones told from the perspective of Jack as a little boy. Its a rare treat to read about a House!spawn that is normal in his specialness, if that makes any sense.

I was trying to find a baby picture of Hugh Laurie and failed, but I did find his good friend Mr. Fry.
Oh, that's great! And its so amusing, how SF is so linked to HL that he even makes his way into fanfic about a character that HL portrays :)

Hope we cross paths again
You know, I think I've read another of your drabble-fics. A fluffy one about H/W with a baby daughter and Wilson's Mom in denial about the nature of their relationship. It was very funny, and I didn't leave a comment b/c I didn't have an LJ acct at that point...So, very belatedly, let me say that I enjoyed that piece as well.
