This TV critic doesn't name his source but says:

4. Robert Sean Leonard. Wilson was always the Watson to House's Holmes. Sometimes described as a "doormat,” he manages to make fans believe somebody could put up with all of House's selfish, childish behaviour and still care about him. Many critics single him out as the one supporting character who could never leave the show. Canadian footnote: his name is derived from two neighbouring buildings on the campus of Montreal's McGill University: James Administration Building and Wilson Hall.

Has anybody heard that derivation for Wilson's name before? Which of the show producers/creators graduated from McGill?

(snort) This is why I distrust journalists, because I know exactly where that came from. Wikipedia. It's in Wilson's Wikipedia entry and ONLY there, meaning this writer used only Wikipedia for his research. No I didn't write the Wikipedia entry, I just remember seeing that.
David Shore said in the retrospective that Wilson and House's names were homage to the Sherlock Holmes stories. James Wilson = John Watson.
ETA I just read the bloody article. Not only is he quoting Wikipedia again with his "many critics said that Wilson was the only supporting character who could never leave the show", but he also says that RSL and Omar Epps were the only supporting characters to last the whole either years. He then lists all the others who left without once mentioning Jesse Spencer! Oh, and when was Amanda Seyfriend ever on the show?

That's probably the same article I read. Never heard that bit of trivia before, but I did check McGill's website and the two buildings are part of the campus.
