deelaundry: man reading in an airport with his face hidden by the book (H/W not leaving)
[personal profile] deelaundry
Had a lovely time in New York this weekend. Good friends, good food, good drinks. The MoMA is as wonderful as I remembered, and being able to go through a museum at my own pace (instead of chasing one or more of the Little Laundrys) was a heavenly delight.

It began with a decent enough drive up the...

Kidding. Here is the scoop you want to know.

RSL WAS GORGEOUS.

Oh my lord, GORGEOUS. And I am willing to call him on his chub-periods and bad haircuts and wonky eye, as you all know. But none of those was in evidence at all. He looked incredibly handsome and relaxed, and said "Thank you" politely when three people in a row said exactly the same thing ("I love you on House!").

We were at the back of the crowd waiting by the stage door (I will talk about the play in a minute, by the way), and that was a very, very good thing. Because I was so nervous I'm sure I would've done something awkward and embarrassing if I hadn't had a minute to just watch him without interacting.

He came out the door with a smile on his face, ready to sign autographs. He posed for pictures with those who asked (mostly women but one guy wanted a picture too), and chatted with people briefly. Someone said something that made him laugh (cute laugh!) but I was too far away to hear what it was. Some guy right by the stage door started a chant of "Wilson! Wilson!" and RSL smiled through that as well.

Then someone associated with the play came over to our section to tell us Jim would not pose for pictures with anyone but we were welcome to take his picture. [livejournal.com profile] bironic and I said, "Sure!" cheerfully because we didn't care one whit! We just wanted RSL.

Then Nina Arianda came out, and I kind of wanted her autograph but didn't get it because ROBERT SEAN LEONARD WAS STANDING IN FRONT OF ME.

"Um, do you want..." he said, pointing toward my Playbill. (Can I say how sweet it was that he was modestly hesitant with everyone, never assuming someone wanted his autograph but always waiting for a sign that they did?)

I somehow managed to ask, "Could you please sign this?" and hand him the TV Guide. He made a kind of "huh, hm" sound, possibly surprised that someone had brought something House-related to be signed. Or maybe it was that it was House/Wilson-related. Or maybe that there was so much black on the cover that it was hard for him to figure out where to sign (I didn't get the nerve to turn to the silly string page).

Or maybe it was:

"When did TV Guide get so big?" he asked me. "Didn't it used to be like the size of Readers Digest?"

"Oh, yeah, I think so," I replied, while watching his very pretty hands finally decide to sign across his own forearm in the picture.

I couldn't manage to look him in the eye (did I mention I'm pretty much on the spectrum?) but kept a steady voice, so there's that. And he was wearing nice jeans, baggy at the ankle, and sneakers.

Then [livejournal.com profile] bironic hit him up for a picture and he agreed and my hands were shaking so much I begged him to pose for two with her. Which he did. And she said she didn't mind how blurry the two pictures turned out because she got to touch him double the amount of time.

Then his car was there and after a couple more signatures he jumped in the front passenger side, and Nina Arianda got in the back passenger side, and it took the driver (same play-related person who had told us about Jim Belushi) a few minutes to get in, so I got to watch RSL dig through his backpack and talk to the people in the backseat, and then they left!

I don't know for sure why he was wearing a ball cap with "Grey's Anatomy" on it, but my first thought was the same as [livejournal.com profile] mer_duff's: somebody handed it to him, he thought, "Free hat, cool" and walked out the door.

OK, nevermind, I'll tell you about the play later.

In conclusion:

RSL!

I was thinking today about how I would summarize this, but when I sat down to post, summarization went out the window. *g* Wish you could've been there.

He had cheeks like in your icon! So trim. NYC and/or theater is very good to his looks.

The play was actually good, and I'll write about it in another post later. The pacing was slow at the beginning, but there were several characterization pitfalls it did not fall into, which was awesome.

When RSL and Nina were in the car and the driver wasn't there yet, I was sorely tempted to go get behind the wheel and see how far I could get! : )

It was a struggle! I was trying to memorize everything and not freak out. My one regret is not looking into his eyes close-up. Even with the low light, I bet it still would've been nice. Ah well.

This makes me so happy for you. :-) Envious, sure, but WAY more happy.

And, yes -- I think the "Hm" was probably, "Okay, where do I sign this thing? It's full of black!"

I was looking at the cover beforehand and thinking how little space it had to sign, but when we got to the stage door I was too afraid of crumpling the magazine to open it to the page with more white space. :)

Wish you could've been there to see him, too.

So happy for you! And empathetic since my hands were also shaking like a bitch when I was trying to aim the camera on him and [livejournal.com profile] cuddyclothes.

It's really awesome that you got him to sign THE TV guide.

I'm fanning my fangirl self as I read your awesome account. Don't fret about not looking into RSL's eyes. It was probably a natural survival instinct to avoid a massive meltdown or restraining order.

"Um, do you want..." he said, pointing toward my Playbill.
--RSL IC and absolutely charming!

Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm looking forward to your thoughts on the play.

LOVE that he took the "Grey's Anatomy" cap and said he loves free stuff!

Sorry I didn't get to meet you in NYC...one of my favorite pasttimes is waiting at the stage door, and without someone there, I'm a stalker.

Congratulations!

EEEEE! What a great adventure! And how lovely that RSL stayed in character by saying something unpredictable!

You and [livejournal.com profile] bironic have so much more nerve that I do! You're examples to us all of going after what we want!

And I'm glad he had "very pretty" hands. How awful if he had had hairy gorilla hands or similar. :-)
