If you care about LGBT issues but don't know what to do first (or next), there is an organization for you! Straight for Equality at http://www.straightforequality.org was created by PFLAG National (in the US) to answer questions and help you do what you can for equality.

This is a space for people who are not perfect, who are awkward, who have concerns, who don't know everything. Straight for Equality wants you to go at your own pace, and they appreciate your participation.

From the website:
"This is a program about awareness and fairness. You don't need to march. You don't need to shout a slogan. But you may be surprised by how effective small changes can be..."

Thank you so much for this link. I wish we had something similar in Italy, where it would be sorely needed. As things are now, I will put a nice small poster about LGBT rights on the door of my office (of course today I forgot it home).

I also suspect I have one gay colleague, who despite being a full professor still hasn't found the guts to come out. If this were the case I wouldn't blame him: I work in a very homophobic (and misogynist, and sexist, and racist...) environment.

I wish there were more resources everywhere! One thing I did find for Italy was this page: http://www.dayagainsthomophobia.org/spip.php?page=fiche&id_mot=49&lang=en

Today is International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia, and it seems some in Italy are taking good steps to have a better environment for equality!

Yeah, they had a demo in Milan and all I got was this lousy poster :(.
Sorry, everything interesting always happens in Milan and in Rome. Thanks for the link, it's nice to know my country is moving as well - maybe they heard Poland hosts Pride this year and realized that if they weren't careful we would be Europe's most homophobic country again. [No offense meant to Poland but it doesn't have a spectacular record in this direction, and fo the same reasons as Italy I think.]
