deelaundry: man reading in an airport with his face hidden by the book (H/W not leaving)
[personal profile] deelaundry
I've finished copying all my fics to Archive of Our Own. \o/ (My page is here.)

Determined two things in the process:

1) Holy smokes, I used to be prolific.
2) We desperately need more writers to put their House fics on AO3. When 18 percent of the fics about a popular character (Wilson) are written by one writer (remaining nameless), there is not enough on the archive!

And, three favors to ask:

i) If any of my fics are linked to yours in any way (remix, inspired by, sequel/prequel) and you have your fics on AO3, please let me know so I can fix up the links.

ii) I've been trying to come up with good tags for my fics so they'll be easily findable by people interested in different topics such as "gender issues" or "light bondage" or "bad puns." If you have any suggestions for particular fics, PM me, please!

iii) When you're reading on AO3 - not just my fics, but anyone's - if you have something to say about the story, please leave a comment. If you don't have the energy to leave a comment but like the fic, please click the "Leave Kudos ♥" button. It takes milliseconds to do, but leaves the writer pleased for far longer.

I've got Hi, Dads (http://archiveofourown.org/works/75501) on AO3. And someday I'll get all my fic over there...

Is there a way for multiple authors to contribute to a series? Because we could add them together that way...

We can make a Collection. That's the only way I know of.

I'll probably end up putting my one shots up there at some point, so some House oneshots will eventually end up there with my fingerprints all over them. I've applied for a username, but it'll probably take a while before I get an invite.

Hope to see you there soon! I have linked to your fics with Ruth Wyatt in my fic "Keeper."

I'm going to link back to yours. I've been putting my stuff up slowly on AO3 because I don't want to swamp them. So far I've got like three house things up.

(btw did you participate in 'The One where They're Girls' random genderswap craziness, I want to put my Chase/Cameron one of those up, but it won't make sense out of the context of the other ones.)

Thanks!

I did participate in that, and I've started a collection for it. Haven't yet asked any of the other authors to put their fics in, but would love for you to add the Chase/Cameron.

It's here: http://archiveofourown.org/collections/TSTATH

Dee, I know this is going to sound silly, but how did you upload an icon for your name?

Not silly at all! Go to "My Psueds" and then Edit. You get to upload one icon.

Thanks for the gentle kick in the tush! I already had a lot of my older fic up on AO3, but I've started importing my House M.D. fic now.

And ITA about the Kudos (is that a new feature?). I wouldn't mind having so much less traffic than on ff.net if the ratio of acknowledgment to hits were greater.

Aweseome that you're on there! I have taken forever to get my stories up on AO3, for no particular reason.

There's a reason - it takes time and is kind of tedious! I can only import and format so many stories before I need to take a break and do something more urgent or enjoyable.

I somehow thought the AO3 was an invite-only project reserved for the top-quality writers. Can one just apply for a username? Does one need cv, list of publications and letters of reference?

Anyone can join! You need an invitation, but you don't have to submit anything and are not judged. Here's the question and answer on why you need an invitation:

Invitations
How do I get an invitation code?
Invitation codes will be distributed on a regular basis depending on how many new users the site can support. You can get an invitation code in two ways:

•You can add your name to the Invitation Queue, and we'll email you an invitation as soon as the site can support more users. This will be on a first-come, first-served basis. We've done it this way so that you won't have to rely on knowing an existing Archive user to get an account.

•You can receive an invitation code from an existing Archive user. We'll periodically give people with accounts on the Archive some invitation codes to hand out as they'd like, so that people can enjoy spreading the word and build their fannish networks.

Why can't I create an account without an invitation code?
We're using the invitation code system so that the Archive can grow in a controlled manner. We need to add new users gradually so that our account numbers don't grow beyond what our hardware, bandwidth, help and support can cope with. This helps us ensure that everyone using the Archive gets the best possible experience.

Thanks for the help.

PS "cv, list of publications and letters of reference" is something that I read and write enough of in RL, glad there's no such thing in fandom!

I put "The Princess And The Peeved" up there, but I got stuck on how to add more chapters once I uploaded the main document.

Maybe I should also move my H/W oneshots there. That doesn't cancel out them being here, does it? I prefer LJ to AO3. I've never gotten a single hit over there after the first few days.

If you click on "edit" you can check a box that says "This work has multiple chapters." It lets you give separate headings/summaries/notes for each chapter, too.

There is no cancellation. You can transfer copies of your fic from any online archive or upload your own document.

There are things I don't like about AO3 (and the low hit rate is certainly one), but at least it's easy to edit stuff once you've posted it.

I don't think many (if any) House fans go to AO3 every day the way that they visit LJ, or ff.net. You'd have to "advertise" on LJ if you want a significant volume -- or be part of a fest that has all its stories on AO3, like Remix.

But if you tag well, you get people finding you later who like one of your topics.

The biggest benefit for me as a writer is that it's a separate archive from LJ. If aything ever happens to LJ, my fics are still safe.

Browsing through Fanlore to see what tropes are cataloged on there might help you come up with some good tags.

Hey! Stopped by to thank you for encouraging readers to leave kudos. I received several today, and I'd bet Wilson's left dimple it wasn't a coincidence. :D
