Go read this Robert Sean Leonard news then come back here and discuss.

I'm not kidding about NYC in mid-May.

Note: House spoilers may appear in the comments below or on that post.

ETA: Whattaya know? This is my 1000th post. Huh.

I have a work project in late April/early May but will figure out a date I can get up there to see him (and you, sorry for not saying that). Do you think he will be there for the "previews" or would they get an understudy for him then?

I don't know - he's not a huge draw the way someone like Kevin Spacey would be, and there's the TV show schedule to work with as well. He might be in a contractual obligation for the rest of the season, which if so, would point to him not being in the 'previews.' But I'm sure more news will come within the next few weeks.

I wonder if he'll be back at all for next season. Again, we'll just have to wait for more news.

We will have to wait and see. My preliminary guess is that RSL will flee while the fleeing's good, and Wilson won't be back. But stranger things have happened. I hope whatever is going to occur, occurs deliberately without TPTB stringing us along. The show just is not the same without steady Wilson presence. Given what happened with Cameron, I'm not too optimistic, though.

I've pretty well divorced the show on TV with the toys I play with, so whatever happens, I know my ability to entertain myself will be all right.

Would that more people understood that distinction...

I think TPTB saw Cameron's role as "generic, caring ingénue." I think they value Wilson more.

RSL went looking for a TV show to give himself the financial security that would allow him to do stage for a long time. If the show is renewed (and I assume it will be), Wilson's return will probably depend on just how much money TPTB will pay him for one more year of his life.

Let's hope!

RSL has never been shy about saying he is eager to spend the rest of his life doing theater -- and driving soccer carpools. :) So I'm not at all surprised he wants to go. I'm just surprised they're letting him do this when S7 isn't even done filming yet. They're only on episode 17, six more episodes to go, and RSL will need to be in New York full-time in what, March? April?

Early March. Previews start March 31 so, if they're getting 4 weeks rehearsal, they'd start on March 3.
http://ibdb.com/production.php?id=489630

That gives him 3 more weeks in LA so he'd miss the final 3 episodes of the season. Obviously none of them can be Wilson-centric but, with a little planning, they can film a couple of scenes with him for each out of order. (They're usually starting one episode while they're finishing the previous one anyway.)

Opening night is April 24. So a 3-month run would finish at the end of June. Even if he misses the filming of the first episode or two, with more than 2 months before the season premiere, they could add him.

In theory, at least, he could be in every episode. And that doesn't happen even when he's in LA full-time. :D

I have to figure out my work calendar, but I will definitely be going. A friend of mine from college is theater reviewer for the New York Times. If I was crafty or clever, I'd be able to figure out a way to maneuver that into me somehow getting to meet RSL... But I'm not. So I'll just stick with watching the man perform.

I don't know how "previews" work -- do you think he will be there then? As Hannah says above, he might have TV work to finish up before the actual "opening" date on April 24.

I don't know, I would think he would have to be in the previews. That is the point of it, to preview and get notes on their performance. I've only seen one other show in preview and the main actors were in it, plus Elton John was there. It was for Aida.
I would be going on the 19th or 20th of April and the show opens the 24th, I would think he should be there so close to the opening.

I will maybe go, if I can work it out. Although, having to watch Jim Belushi...that will be a bit of a sacrifice! :)

As for what it means for Wilson - it sounds like it will run in the off-season; I think they're filming 18 or 19 now, so they could well be done shooting by the time they need him. Though, heh, I don't know why I'm really debating the point - my only feeling for the show most of the time these days is amused contempt, but I guess I still want to think they wouldn't be crazy enough to go forward with the show without this character.

I have to figure out my work schedule but will let you know my dates. (Although with your bad luck of destination planning... maybe you should tell the universe you're heading to Peoria, not NYC.)

I still want to think they wouldn't be crazy enough to go forward with the show without this character.

Me, too, but it feels like this season has been setting House (the character) up to be able to live without Wilson. (Because we all know once you're half of a couple, you don't need a best friend any more -- EYES PERMANENTLY ROLLED) House doesn't have pain any more, and he's developing an internal conscience, and he has Cuddy so he won't die alone. I think Wilson is still important to House, and the show, but I'm not convinced TPTB do any more.

Hee, I know...I should probably write a letter of apology to several countries in advance of my next trip, at this rate.

You know, your list of reasons you think it might be true is both right AND a good run-through of why I find the show so deadly dull this season. *g*

Actually, I just looked at our production schedule and Easter is not a good time to be leaving town (which is too bad, because I just got a Playbill notification for a discount on War Horse tickets until April 24), so mid-May might the earliest I could get away. It would be very cool if our plans could intersect!

It would be nice to see him in the theater, but there's no reason to assume Wilson's gone for good.

1) It's a revival, which means that they won't need extensive rehearsals in advance to work out the kinks of a new play. A month would be luxurious, which means RSL would be available for quite a few weeks to film, and since they know about it, they can easily shoot advance scenes with him for later episodes.

(Fred MacMurray had it in his contract for My Three Sons that he'd only work 65 days, so they shot all of his scenes in two 30-day chunks, out of sequence, then went back and shot everything else with an inanimate stand-in for eyeline reference. One of the "sons" referred to it as working with Fred MacMop.)

2) The Times referred to RSL as leaving House "temporarily."

3) A revival isn't a long-running show, unlike a musical which has to recoup its costs. A number of actors have done Broadway during their summers. (Even new plays don't typically last for long, especially not with their original cast members.) There's no reason to assume this is a multi-year commitment.

What seems most likely, unfortunately, is that Wilson's screentime will get cut even more than it has, and his character will have less and less relevance in the show. Which will suck.

I'd personally rather they killed Wilson out right so I don't have to keep watching.

Sorry to be such a Debbie Downer.

I can't believe I'm planning to spend money to see Jim Belushi in a play. Maybe more than once.

Fingers crossed that it's a limited run and that they're planning to write around a Wilson absence for a few episodes like they've done with Thirteen.

I hope so too, and you'd think it would be easy to do - Wilson could go teach oncology in China for a few months and House could make occasional references to talking to him on Skype. Not that I've thought about this ;)

I hadn't seen it; thank you. There is still the possibility the show will under-use or misuse the character but at least he won't be totally gone.

Any thoughts on what that means for how long RSL will stay with Born Yesterday? I don't want to buy tickets for June if I'll miss RSL -- believe it or not, Jim Belushi is not much of a draw for me.
