Know what I find really annoying?

When a person analyzes a situation incorrectly, draws faulty conclusions, and then gets pissed off about the original situation based on the person's own lack of intelligence instead of what actually happened.

Venues in which this occurred lately:
- My job
- My personal life
- My fandom (constantly)

Grrr. In a similar vein, I am also annoyed by people who draw faulty conclusions based on nothing but the narrowness of their own minds (e.g., the people who say you can't develop character in fiction shorter than X number of words).

In more positive news: there will be burritos for dinner tonight.

Burritos are awesome. The place we're going to serves brownies for dessert, which ought to be too much after a burrito, but... AWESEOME

Oy. THIS. Thank you.

Also, hi. I'm Felis and have been lurking here for a while and I hope you don't mind that I comment to say that I agree with you wholeheartedly and was thinking the same thing today. For obvious reasons, heh. :-)

Hi there! You can't really go wrong with a comment agreeing wholeheartedly. : ) Although I don't mind if you disagree with me, either, as long as you're reasonable about it. (By which I mean, you use reason, in general, to think.)

Kind of like all those 2012 predictions based on the existence of Planet X which is itself based on the "odd" orbit of Neptune which is, in fact, not odd, but based on bad data?

(I've been on a Neil deGrasse Tyson kick (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7uE1UBs1mlA) lately, which is good. He never annoys me.)

That sort of thing, on a smaller scale.

I have another friend who's a Neil DeGrasse Tyson devotee. : )

I find differences of opinion in fandom more unfathomable than anything about my job or personal life. I'm constantly amazed over the conflicting points of view about a show we all care for.

There can certainly be different points of view, given that we all have different preferences and ideals. For example, back in the first season I thought the Cameron-House "young ingenue falls for gruff older mentor to heal his wounded heart" plotline was cliche and boring. But some fans loved that idea, found it charming and romantic.

What annoys me is distorted analysis of the show and its characters. If anyone had looked at S1 House-Cameron and said, "I love it because they're such equals intellectually!" Um, no. That's not what their relationship was about. I'm not saying Cameron is a slouch in the intelligence department; she's quite clealry bright. But within the show, nobody's as smart as House, and intellectual connection wasn't what the storyline was about.

Yes, you are absolutely right. I wasn't specific enough when I said "differences of opinion." Distorted analysis is a better term.

Not at all. I'm having one of those foggy days where I need to attend a class in Clarification 101.

Always admire how you can choose just the right words to express your thoughts.

Sounds like someone has a case of the Mondays needs a ladder of inference (http://www.google.com/#hl=en&source=hp&q=ladder+of+inference&aq=f&aqi=g10&aql=&oq=&fp=22b4dcbb1403dc0f)!

No burrito ever? You poor thing. You have to have a good one, though. There are several frozen/fast-food ones that are definitely not worthy of the burrito name.

You have to get them made to order for you. Otherwise they put those NASTY, gray, refried beans in them.

Burritos without refried beans are pretty good. But not as good as fajitas.

I've never had a burrito, either, but looking at Google Images, they look very tasty :D

And absolutely agreeing with you on the narrow-minded people. One of our top managers at work has the firm belief that nobody should stay in a job longer than a couple of years or so, and views those of us who have been there a long time (15 years, in my case, eek) as Deeply Suspicious :/

As for fandom, I gather that Quail has gone away again... *shrugs*

Bironic's comment above with the link to the "ladder of inference" makes a lot of sense. People quite often like to skip over the "real data and experience" part, and just go right with their preconceived notions. It saves time, obviously, but when the evidence is so overwhelmingly in contrast to the notion... it bothers me so much.

Over here in the US, there is a news channel that keeps repeating, "Americans don't want the health care reform bill that Obama has proposed." But they are basing that on polls that show under 50 percent of Americans oppose the bill. It's not even half of Americans who say on that station's own polls that the bill should be defeated. Grr. Then they interview senior citizens for their opinions, and the senior citizens say that they don't want the government to run healthcare. But guess who pays for and runs the medical insurance for American senior citizens? The government!

Sorry to go off on a different tangent. They need to get his health care reform bill passed now.
