Let me start by stressing these are just my two cents and that I'm sure lots of people will like this story and that this is not personal because I never heard of this author until today - nor do I wish to discourage anyone, or anything.
Phew. I mean, who am I to criticize (which is a line from a Gavin-Friday-song, by the way, and goes on: "my pointing finger backfires", such a lovely, poetic line...).
But, yeah, the whole story through I got the feeling it was trying to make a Point, only the Point was never made, or if it was made, I didn't see it or I was too dense to see it. Also I thought Wilson was a bit off. He seemed too subdued. The writing was excellent though.
Oh wow. Never openly said I didn't like something before.
I can see that impression. I personally had thought the point was that although House is always skeptical of anyone's motives for doing anything nice -- and he doesn't think making a nice gesture is a reason for anyone to think they're superior to others -- he realizes that Wilson does do nice things for other people's benefit and not just his own motives. And in his own way, he wanted to thank Wilson. : )
"...because I never heard of this author until today..." I urge you to read her story Spectrum which is..here >> http://vampmissedith.livejournal.com/8996.html
I reckon you may enjoy that more. I dunno why though, it's just a feeling. :D
I'm sorry you felt I was forcing a Point you didn't understand, but I would appreciate if you would review it on my site anyway--I like hearing differing opinions as it helps me learn to write. I wasn't trying to force anything. It was supposed to let the reader decide what they feel about altruism, and that House, although he doesn't really groove on the idea of it, is capable of doing nice things.
This fic in general was just a free-write (and normally I don't post free-writes) but I liked this one.
Never be afraid to post a review, even if there is some criticism. That's how people learn.
And yes, House was thanking Wilson in his own way for being kind to others. I'm sorry you feel Hosue doesn't do that, but I guess this is just one of those things where we'll have to agree to disagree on what is IC. Dee, kudos for catching that bit.
Thanks for your kind words. I don't post reviews on stories I don't like, on principle, so I won't do that in this case either (i only answered Dee's question in this case, and looking back, I should maybe have done so in a pm), but I'm glad you are so nice about it.
Oh, okay. Well, I've seen your name around so I assume you've read something of mine or I read yours and your name doesn't inspire my gag reflex so what you wrote must've been good (I'm horrible with names and pennames and remembering what they're connected to.) I have a hard time remembering to review too, (re: laziness) but since you did review it on someone else's site I thought maybe you thought I'd be like; "FUCK OFF AND DIE!!!!!" or something and I just wanted to let you know that wasn't the case.
I've been around in fanfiction long enough to know that sometimes, even a small criticism offends the author to an outrageous degree so I wanted to let you know that I wasn't like that. I didn't realize it was a principle thing and wanted to give my "don't be afraid!" advice.
Yeah, some people don't handle criticism too well, and that's putting it mildly... Like I said, I appreciate you being so nice about it, that's a wonderful change!
To be honest I'd never read anything of yours before Dee (and later Moose, see comments) recc'd your stories. I don't frequent the comm's and I have a small f-list, so I tend to miss heaps and heaps of potentially great fic.
Fic is like crack to me. In some fandoms, I've gotten to the point where I've literally read everything. (Seriously, I don't think there is a Spike/Buffy fic I haven't read at least once.)
You can read my stuff if you like but if you don't like it that's okay. I don't lock anything to specific lists, so you don't have to . . . know a password or anything.
I know what you mean about differing tastes though and . . . badly received criticism. I've been banned from sites because I found so-and-so OoC (unluckily for me it was a very popular author and fanfiction so . . .) Literally banned from the entire site. As for differing tastes, I'm not huge on est. relationships so I probably miss out on some good stuff. Or death!fics. Or mpreg. (I'm picky.)
You were banned for criticizing someone's fic? OMG it doesn't get much worse, does it? So sorry you had that happen, that just sucks.
I hardly read fan fic anymore these days, I un-followed the few comm's I still followed and only read the fic of the people on my f-list (and not even all of that). Picky indeed! I'm sure I miss heaps of good stuff, but I also avoid loads of things I can't stand, so all in all I guess it's a good thing.
It was some Harry Potter fanfiction site, and before Twilight HP was the psycho fandom. In my defence, Hermione had grown up to be a beautiful woman with curves in all the right places and had straightened her hair and it was one of those fics where she started teaching at Hogwarts and she'd completely cut Ron and Harry out of her life. I explained that I didn't like it when authors made Hermione gorgeous and didn't think it fair that she would completely abandon her friends, or that Snape would be the one to make the attempt to talk to her (she was just so beautiful he had to speak with her) and I wasn't overly rude and I even put in a few things I did like about her story, but then a few days later I got an email from the mods that they didn't appreciate trolling and/or harrassing authors and that flames were not allowed, and then they banned me.
I am picky, but to me mpreg is offensive, and I only read established relationships if it's a canon established relationship, or it's part of a series where it began as first-time (or if it's a long fic where they start off first-time and then work into established.) It's just my preference but like what you said, you've probably missed good stuff but you didn't come across bad crap, either.
I've yet to come across a House/Wilson story that was horrible, though. There are some I don't like simply because I didn't like it, but not because it was a badly written, completely OoC, thrown-together piece of crap. Just because it wasn't my "thing" or whatever. So I understand your point--sometimes, there are things you don't groove on for no other reason other than the fact it just didn't click.
(If you get multiple replies, I'm sorry. I keep getting 'internet explorer cannot find webpage' messages.)
No multiple replies, don't worry! Oh wow, that sounds horrible. Judging from what you wrote here, you weren't flaming/trolling/harrassing. But yeah, it's difficult with criticism. I once had someone specifically ask me for constructive criticism and then when I advised to use spelling control she de-friended me. Good times!
I understand your picky-ness. I'm pretty picky myself and very much into my own fanon...
I've seen some G*dawful H/W-fic around, thankfully I don't even remember the names of the authors. Really, really bad stuff. But again - who am I to critize? I'm absolutely certain heaps of people think my stuff is dreadful, too.
