I have found out the real-life identity of the infamous [livejournal.com profile] nightdog_barks! I don't normally put such information on LJ, for just anyone to read, but YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW.

[livejournal.com profile] nightdog_barks' real-life name is:

James Lee Burke

"Her" latest novel, Rain Gods, is proof positive. "... a pitched battle between gangs of displaced bad guys, fighting among themselves for the new territory against the outmatched locals.

Some of these boldly drawn newcomers ... are living like "colonials in their own country". Others are stuck in hellholes like Chapala Crossing, a rusty-dusty town on the Mexican border that takes its visual definition from an abandoned filling station and a crumbling church.

Hackberry Holland, the tall, taciturn sheriff ... finds the decomposing corpses of nine Asian women buried in the field behind the church, collectively mowed down by a World War II machine gun and plowed under by a bulldozer. The women were prostitutes and drug mules in an organized-crime ring run by a shadowy Russian mobster based in Phoenix. Whoever among the crime boss's many competitors ordered the mass murder, it was executed by the legendary hit man Jack Collins, known as Preacher and both feared and respected for being "a mean motor scooter and crazy besides".

Crazy he may be, but Preacher is one of Burke's most inspired villains - violent and cruel, but also profoundly moralistic and self-loathing, qualities that he shares with Hackberry Holland, as he informs the guilt-haunted sheriff when they finally meet. Preacher will kill any number of people in imaginative ways, yet spare the foolish men and furious women who are offered to him as sacrificial victims. But while Preacher is a treat, camped out in the desert and howling to nameless ancient gods, you don't want to underestimate the locals, who have their own deities to answer to. Even Preacher gets that. "These are religious people," he says. "Disrespect their totems and feel their wrath." Right now, the native gods are withholding their blessings because of the killers and lowlifes who have brought the blight. But with good guys like Holland on the job, it might yet rain on this parched land."

Russian mobsters, murderers running loose in the desert, and religiously deranged hit men? By Jove, Dee, YOU'RE RIGHT!

Nightdog, can we call you J.L. for short, or do you prefer Jimmy? :P

It was the protagonist's name that first clued me in: Hackberry Holland, come on. Classic Nightdog, missing only a middle name like Finch to complete the tell!

Are you, perhaps, secretly a famous detective?

I ask mostly because I saw a poster for the new Holmes movie and OMGIAMSOEXICTED and ILOVEROBERTDOWNEYJRSOOOOMUCH.

Also, Jude Law is hot.

No, I am not a detective... but that movie looks seriously hot. I've heard it doesn't stick to Holmes canon very well, but, um, Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law!

OMG DEEEEEEE. Hackberry Holland's brother is Billy Bob.

...I'm not sure if this pokes holes in your idea or reinforces it. Heh.

....nah. TOTES REINFORCES IT. IN FACT, I AM SURPRISED NIGHTDOG HAS NOT ALREADY HAD A BILLY BOB IN ONE OF HER STORIES. (wait, am I wrong about that? ACK. Whatever.)

XD Yesterday I heard an interview with Mr. Burke on NPR about this book, and it sounded like something Nightdog would write. XD By the way, Mr. Burke seemed like an utter sweetie in the interview. I haven't read any of his books yet, but I definitely will.

Also, I want to read that book now.

It must have been that statue of Fidel Castro in the background that gave us away!

And yeah, I'd like to read that book also. James Lee Burke is an amazing writer. *g*
