Last Days of Disco DVD re-release with additional commentary by the director, Chloe Sevigny, and Chris Eigeman.

- Chris Eigeman! I love to hear him talk. The topics, and the delivery -- awesome. Not as much of him in this movie as in "Barcelona," but EEEEEE for him doing commentary.
- Anyone who enjoys the "Wilson is a dick who preys on women" falsehood interpretation of his character MUST watch this movie, and marvel in Tom. MUST.
- Chloe Sevigny actually did not bug me in this movie!
- Nor did Kate Beckinsale, although her character was repellent to me. She was fun to hate.
- At 1:27 in the vid on the page above, RSL does the lip-bite = dimple thing! Cute.
- OMG, Albie from "Big Love" is in this! I totally forgot that was him. What a tangled little knot of actors.

It's interesting, and pretty to look at, and the RSL connection is fun. I haven't wanted to buy the DVD, but I think the extra commentary may make it worth it for me.

Yep, it's one of those films that if I'm flipping through the movie channels and I see that it's on, I'll stop and watch it. It's smart and interesting, and it's so horrible in almost a meta kind of way to see RSL as Tom trying to convince the girl that she didn't get her STD from him.

I may be making this up, but I seem to have some memory of an interview with RSL in which he said he thought Tom was the darker side of Wilson, or that Wilson could have been Tom in another life, or something like that.

trying to convince the girl that she didn't get her STD from him.

And making it all her fault that they had sex in the first place. "I wanted something pure but you jumped in the sack and ruined it for me." So sleazy!

YES! God, he's such a pig in this film. Like you said to Hannah -- a lot of jerks among the characters. That's why Mr. N doesn't like it as much as I do -- "These people are all assholes!"

Hee.

I should watch that one of these days. For some reason I have two copies of it on VHS.

Also, the criteria the Criterion Collection uses is sometimes quite baffling.

It's not a very fun movie, nor especially hopeful. A lot of jerks among the characters. But it is pretty.

I don't know Criterion's criteria. (Boy, that looks weird.) The director, Stillman, is a "thinky" kind of director, though.

Well, not every movie has to be fun or joyful: No Country For Old Men, for example, or The 400 Blows. Pretty does help, and No Country, for all its bleakness, is gorgeous and haunting to look at.

Some of the Criterion picks are made to sell more DVDs to recoup the funds spent on the more obscure titles not so many people will rush out and buy, but this one's just out of place.
