What was that lamp thing? Andy Samberg's "Make the shopkeepers watch us have sex" killed me, though.

Favorite skit, hands down, was the Bronx Beat. THAT WAS US! Just perving over HL. "I'd like to give you a Christmas goose. ... You like tongue?" Cute blushing on his part.

"You're gonna babysit my kids, and I'm gonna kiss you." Yay!

He could NOT keep it together during the Bronx Beat sketch. He was about two seconds from loosing it and cracking up.

And the jacket he wore in the beginning was hideous.

The jacket was a disaster! Almost blew my retinas out. It distracted a little bit from the lead-balloon monologue though (sad to say).

The Oliver joke got me, but that's because of my upcoming trip.

I love that he's been in pretty much every sketch tonight. And singing in most of them, too. It's fun.

I could just imagine RSL laughing over the Lamps thing. My fave was the weird holiday meal! It was so awkward and wrong it made me laugh like an idiot.

It took a while to get into the lamp thing, but in retrospect it really makes me laugh.

The awkward holiday meal... I've lived through that! Several times. Hee hee hee.

Awww, I liked the lamps. But my fav was Gov. Patterson. Blind jokes. They never get old.

And Hugh was great, as usual. Man, they made him sing a LOT.

I felt so awkward with the blind jokes but when they started throwing in the incompetence and drugs jokes too I felt better. And the hating New Jersey jokes.

Hugh did sing a lot. In his contract?

Hee. I liked the Lamps, but maybe it was just because I couldn't stop thinking to myself, "It's Hugh Laurie. As a giant lamp."

Loved the Bronx Beat, and especially enjoyed seeing how HL did a slightly different American accent in each sketch.

Hated the digital short -- the cookies thing creeped me out and it was a half-step away from the car commercial where the woman brings in the cookies made with "horse laxative."

In retrospect, the Lamps were very funny. I keep thinking of different things and laughing.

The punchline to the digital short was lame, but the reaching to get a snack in the middle of a meeting is SO my company. And me, although not during a meeting that serious. Heh.

I totally WTFed at the lamp one. It was one of the worst sketches I've ever seen. And I'm with you, the Bronx Beat was hilarious. I fucking loved that one. Adorable blushing and cute little laughs. He was in serious danger of cracking up, and I love those moments. I really LOLed at the line that went something like, 'You could really go places with that accent' because, oh, the irony. LOL

He looks nice in red but he reminded me of a sort-of-dressed-up lumberjack at the beginning. And it was interesting to see the slightly different American accents going on, but I noticed he really channeled House in the digital short (not so much with the sarcasm and attitude, but the word emphasis and general physical mannerisms).

Agree completely. That was the first "American accent" sketch where I immediately thought -- that's House.

Totally. Not that I was looking for it, but I noticed it relatively quickly. The awkward Christmas dinner sketch reminded me of the American accent Fry-and-Laurie style of old. But I could be off on that one, since it's been a while since I've watched those.

No, you're totally right! It was an old-time accent of his, where he could sort of do it well, as long as he didn't have to speak more than several words in a row. Very odd to hear now.

Oh yeah, that one really hit the spot. The other variations on the American accent he did were sort of meh - perhaps because he's so used to speaking like House now. But man, when *that* accent comes out to play... the whole atmosphere of the room changes. There's *urgency* in the air. :)

I loved the lamp sketch for two reasons:

1. HUGH LAURIE WAS A LAMP.

2. I can now begin sentences with "Until the homicidal lamp part..."

The monologue was iffy until the present and the musical medley.

He sang so much tonight. I love that. And we were scared he wasn't going to sing. Kind of wish Stephen had been on stage at the end. Actually I wish he'd been on stage period. Actually, I wish Hugh had given the chap stick to Stephen. Most of the nation would think he was giving it to someone random, and the rest of us would know better. :)

Giving the Chapstick to Stephen would've been nice. I was (naively) hoping for an RSL appearance too, since NYC is his home base, but no luck.

As Carrie said below, Hugh now has the prestigious "portrayed a lamp" credit on his resume. Soon to be accompanied by "portrayed a genius cockroach." : )

The Bronx sketch was such a great, different way to express the whole accent/sex symbol thing and Hugh's discomfort with it. So fun!

LAMPS! Looking back, I think the female lamp shooting the clock was my favorite part.

I MUST CONFESS THAT I TOTALLY TURNED IT OFF AFTER THE WEDDING SKETCH BECAUSE IT WAS WAY TOO PAINFUL TOO WATCH. HUGH LAURIE ON SNL IS LIKE COMMUNISM. IT'S AN AWESOME THEORY BUT JUST DOES NOT WORK IN REALITY. WHY? BECAUSE HUGH IS WAY TO CLEVER AND FUNNY AND SMART FOR THAT GOD-AWFUL WRITING, THUS, IT JUST BECOMES AWWWWWKWARD. POOR HUGH.

I DID LIKE THE FAMILY DINNER THOUGH. THAT IS HOW YOU DO AWKWARD HUMOR AND MAKE IT WORK.

Yes, agreed. Although the Bronx, the lamp and the family dinner sketch were great.

I loved Hugh, but I was also reminded why I usually never watch SNL except for trying to catch the Live Update, and now that Poehler is going, it will most likely rot now too.

BOOOOOOOOOOO, Hulu won't let me watch because I'm not in the USA. Oh well, I'll just have to wait for someone to post it to You Tube with the other clip.

Talking of which, I echo your WHAT? only in a much larger font. I don't get the lamps at all, although I did enjoy the surreality (is that a word? Hmm) of Hugh as a lamp.

I liked the monologue, I thought he was going to give Stephen the chapstick too, in fact every time they showed the audience I looked for Stephen. I thought the sketches were mostly lame but I always love to hear Hugh sing so I liked that aspect of it, and also that he still acted his ass off instead of phoning it in like some people would do when forced to be in lame sketches. They should have just had Hugh write the damn show.
