deelaundry: man reading in an airport with his face hidden by the book (me2)
[personal profile] deelaundry
I've been posting a lot lately, and you're probably well right sick of me, and I don't blame you. I'm kind of sick of me, too.

But that's not the point of this post. The point is: I'm doing the House recs on [livejournal.com profile] crack_van in July (which is 3 days away -- how did that happen?). Any suggestions on how to write a rec? Mine always go something like this: "This is good. You should read it." Not detailed or robust enough for [livejournal.com profile] crack_van, I'm thinking.

PS. They really need reccers for House, starting in August. Sign up here.

I like it when recs have a quote or two. Also, aha I'm sure you know this already but like, what sets this fic apart, "I've read fics with this theme before, but this one is original and doesn't fall into typical cliches" or "It's not often the characterization of Wilson agrees with me!"

Just, seriously, whatever stood out to you about the fic.

Good advice; thanks. It's typical on [livejournal.com profile] crack_van to include an excerpt so that'll definitely be in there. Now I just need to get writing.

What [livejournal.com profile] simmysim said. Ask yourself "Why do I like this fic? Well, because of a, b, and c."

Then in your rec, say "People should read this because of a, b, and c."

Writing fic is easier than writing recs! There's absolutely an art to reccing - [livejournal.com profile] bironic's a master at it. Thanks!

No spamming at all, you're keeping in touch, you're entertaining us with adorable stories and interesting DVD-extra's, and you're asking questions to keep our brains in shape! All quite commendable.

I never (NEVER)remember to check my friends page on LJ. But I'm pretty sure I'm not sick of you posting -- I stop by here a couple of (5) times a day to see if you've posted anything new.

People in the LJ branch of the House fandom know your writing. They'll know that if they like your stuff they're willing to try anything you rec. So whatever info you supply will be a bonus.

You should probably create a standard form for the basics.
Fandom:
Main Characters and/or Pairing:
Length:
Author:
Rating:
Genre: Angst, Humor, Character Death, Crack

I'm sure I forgot some. But then all you need is a few sentences on why you liked it and, possibly, an excerpt.

Yes, but you know my time frame -- you have until mid-September now that they pushed the season premier back.

Thanks, Mer! Some day I'm going to get back to the Wilson in College fic. Some day!

PS. Did you see the convention people are spamming LJ comms again? They seem to have avoided [livejournal.com profile] house_wilson and [livejournal.com profile] housefic, though... I can't imagine why...

Heh - I noticed it at [livejournal.com profile] sick_wilson. They obviously only read the name of the com, not its purpose.

I wasn't going to bug, but yay for more Wilson in college! Some day (I've now put off my Father's Day story for yet another year, though at least it's longer than 300 words now)...

And now I'm thirsty for a g&t.

[livejournal.com profile] queenzulu does great recs that aren't very long. She usually starts with "Here's what caught my attention about this story," which leads into a bare-bones summary of "Here's the premise," and that segues into "why you read it" and concludes with a short excerpt.

She's this month's reccer on [livejournal.com profile] crack_van, so I will peruse them in more detail. (I've been just jumping to the fics instead of reading the recs closely.)

I have to say, your icon has the most adorable Corgi I've ever seen it. I think it's the ear standing up so attentively -- she or he is obviously a curious dog!

I was the reccer a while back; I tended to put in authors that hadn't gotten onto the van already, or stories that were unlikely to get attention otherwise.

Well, hun...I don't know you well enough to be tired of you. Soooo....happy posting.

Re: talking too much
Heh...at least you're keeping in touch with your friends, unlike those whom one has to drag everything out of because they don't communicate until you do so.

Re: rec's
I agree with everyone else. Oh, and the form idea is good because it will help create a consistency I'm sure we will all learn to count on. hee
