An analogy

I've decided:  House and Wilson are like cake and frosting, respectively.

People don't say, "I want some frosting"; they say, "I want a piece of cake."  And some people don't even like frosting on their cake -- they prefer their cake plain, or with a glaze, or a fruit topping.

Me, I follow the crowd and say, "I want cake," and when I get some, that first bite with both is always amazing.  They're just so good together.

But really I'm in it for the frosting.  Sometimes I don't eat all of the cake part, but I always eat the frosting and savor every bit.  When no one's looking, I steal more frosting off the serving tray.  There are even those secret evenings alone, when I give in to my heart's desire and have frosting straight from the can.  It's a little shameful, because everyone knows you're only supposed to have frosting on cake (or the occasional cookie).  I just can't resist, though -- it gives me too much bliss.

This is awesome. And so true.

I had a theory going for a while that House and Wilson were like a banana and an apple--but a lot of that was visual/art analogy stuff. I much prefer the cake and frosting. :D

Of course this raises issues about which one should go on top.

OK, now that I re-read it, you were pretty clear. If Wilson is the frosting that means HE goes on top, right?

Visually, they are banana/apple, but in terms of how I want them... oh, it's not healthy at all.

If you steal House's frosting or even lick it I'm afraid he might hit you with his cane.

Frosting is what makes cake be so awesome.

Perfect analogy.

I always thought I was a frosting gal, but based on your analogy, it's the cake I really want. Which I guess makes sense -- there are a few cakes that don't need frosting (chocolate chip pound cake...) And there are only a few flavors of cake I really love but they go great with a variety of frostings.

And, thanks to you, I am now craving a really rich, complex golden cake with a few ingredients you can't quite figure out, smothered in a comforting and familiar, warm brown milk chocolate icing.

I was thinking of you when I wrote about cake with glaze... although maybe Foreman's more of a mousse. Able to stand perfectly well on his own, but delectable with "cake" as well.

Moving away from analogy, what's your favorite pie?

Heh, I figured you might've been. Maybe I should've said I like trail mix, because it's all the flavours jumbled up together, and you can pick out the bits you don't like and eat the rest either as a handful, or individual, or two or more together.

As for pie, saskatoon's my favourite.

I am sad, for the purposes of this discussion, that I deleted my pie icon yesterday.

For me, they are like a cream cheese/chocolate brownie. So perfect and addictive when they are melded together. I can't stop, uh, eating them.

Oh yes! Cake can be comforting or festive or both, drabble-sized cupcakes or huge three-layer epics. And the word "cake" sound solid and soothing, and the word "icing" sounds sparkly and a bit dangerous - just the way I like my slash.

Mmm.

... I feel that I must point out that cake is little more than a frosting delivery device.

I eat frosting straight from the can as well. Mmmm ...

I was going to say something about licking Wilson, but I won't. Mmmm. Frosting makes everything so awesome. Except maybe potato chips.

Maybe.

But I want both XD

If I make a cake, I will often pull the icing off and eat it after I've eaten the cake (I have a really yummy icing recipe). And I loathe fruit cake, so every year at Christmas I eat lots of icing (my mother always used to put lots and lots of decorative swirls of icing on our Christmas cake so I could pick it off :D )

I've never thought of making icing on its own just to eat it, but now you've put the idea in my head...

YUMMY!

You can have both; that's the great thing!

You make your own icing? Very cool. I've done it a few times, and it tastes so much better than canned. (Canned is very convenient, though.)

YUM!

*doesn't have cake icon so uses this one*

I've never tried canned icing (unless it's been on someone else's cake) since when I was teeny and learnt to make cakes, there was only one way to get icing and that was to make it yourself.

I like marble cake - chocolate and vanilla swirled together, with chocolate butter cream on top. It's very good for you because it has no additives/artificial colours/artificial flavours. It probably has several million calories, but hey, it's cake, so who's counting? XD

The best thing about canned icing is that you can leave it with the top off and you get that great crustiness. Scoop that off, eat it and pop the rest in the fridge until it's crusty too. Built-in portion control and delicious. (And, besides, sometimes Wilson gets a bit crusty with House.)
