Well, in a way, you sort of *have* same-sex marriage, don't you? Because everyone can obviously tell that Wilson's a guy -- they're not forcing him to wear women's clothes, though I wonder if they should or would. I think what I'm trying to say is that they didn't run Greg and James out of town for marrying each other, and they don't seem to have been harassed or killed for their decision. So far, this seems to have been the first punishment that James has received as Greg's first wife, which might actually be saying something if they've been married for a long time. People might think that James knows his place, and doesn't try to buck the trend. That James submitted himself for this punishment shows that he's a dutiful wife.
As for Greg/Allison, I'm wondering why Greg chose Allison specifically in the first place. You mentioned that Cuddy was a good friend that was separated from them by time and circumstance -- why isn't she Greg's second wife? Is she married to someone else? Has she somehow attained autonomy in a strictly patriarchal society, or does she have a brother that acts for her, like in other patriarchal societies when a woman isn't married?
Oooooh, I like some of these laws already. Just out of curiosity, are there laws about sexual relations between wives? It's possible to take a male wife, as long as (s)he observes the society's traditions and values, but is there a penalty for fighting or feuding between wives?
And maaaaaaan, James would torture himself with watching them every time Greg and Allison have sex? Ouuuuch. That's got to be an exercise in masochism. And I wonder if James gets turned on by it or not. Hrmmm.
