On-Camera Interviews and Other

“When did TV Guide get so big? Didn’t it used to be like the size of Readers’ Digest?” (Said out loud to a fan (me) who asked him to sign the Hilson TV Guide issue, after Born Yesterday)

“Patrick Dempsey es muy feo.” (On-set on-camera interview here with a Spanish-speaking interviewer. a) RSL is wearing the most awful gray t-shirt; and b) he played Patrick Dempsey’s secret brother (and John Larroquette’s secret son) in a pilot in 2002.)

“If you want to offer me a job, I’ll go to Seattle.” (On-camera interview for which he is at his most IDGAF mood. Not that he knows what IDGAF stands for.)

“I could be in Chapter Two. I could be Walter Matthau right now. I have no idea what play I’m in at all.” (House Bloopers Season One)

“I read Numbers and thought, well this is way too many scenes. It’s way too hard, and I’m not interested.”

"I've wanted to be Tony Randall my whole life." (Paley Center panel, House MD)

“It’s so fun to do something over and over again for months. It never gets boring.” (Said completely seriously, about his preference for the stage rather than the screen. Is dude Team Autistic or what?)

“She uses her phone to listen to music. Like a homeless person!” (Quoted in a print interview of his Born Yesterday co-star)

“I’m comparing my family to tarantulas is what I’m doing.” (On-camera interview for which he is at his most IDGAF mood. Not that he knows what IDGAF stands for.)

“After I saw the original production of this musical I went directly to Colony Records, purchased the tape, and then wore it out in my Walkman. I am deeply honored to be here.” (From his bio in Playbill for Sunday in the Park with George in 2017)

Print interviews during his run on House MD

“Homina homina homina.” (said about Hugh Laurie’s British accent, original source gone, copy-paste here)

“If I walked into an oncologist’s office and Ordinary People was on the wall, I’d feel very good.”

“Is everyone obsessed with homosexuality?” Source

About visiting a co-star’s house: “All I remember is there were scented candles and [co-star] came out in a robe.” Source

“The idea of me watching myself on TV, alone in Santa Monica, was just about… just short of, like, a bottle of Maker’s Mark and a shotgun away from shooting myself.” (original source gone, copy-paste here)

“I grew up watching the Public Theater and Shakespeare in the park and Marion Seldes. I mean, I may as well be gay.” (original source gone, copy-paste here)

“If I don’t work for a few days, I don’t even change out of my pajamas, let alone deal with other people. My girlfriend and I are afraid that we’re going to disappear.”

“My girlfriend likes cheap candy like Russell Stover, so I’ll get her those chocolates and a bunch of little things for Valentine’s Day this year. She’s like a 7-year-old in that way.” (said at the same time Omar Epps was talking about buying high-end jewelry for his wife.)

Print interviews before House MD

“Honey, try doing Iceman Cometh. You wind up counting the people who stay.”

“I ride my bike home from the theater, watch Leno and on the weekends go grocery shopping. I mean, I spend Sunday cutting up fruit salad for the week.”

“I think Shakespeare hated young men. That’s my theory, I think he went into bars, and they were mean to him, and he wrote roles like Claudio, and Romeo, and Edmund, Edgar I mean. They are all horrible, horrible roles.”
