Civil rights in New York! Congratulations to all those who fought so hard to make the pasage of last night's same-sex marriage legislation a reality.

Take heart, everyone who's still working for equality in other states. YOU ARE ON THE SIDE OF RIGHT.

With his position still undeclared, Senator Mark J. Grisanti, a Republican from Buffalo who had sought office promising to oppose same-sex marriage, told his colleagues he had agonized for months before concluding he had been wrong.

“I apologize for those who feel offended,” Mr. Grisanti said, adding, “I cannot deny a person, a human being, a taxpayer, a worker, the people of my district and across this state, the State of New York, and those people who make this the great state that it is the same rights that I have with my wife.”

Congratulations to all NY citizens, and a ray of hope for everyone else.

I just hope that one day, asap, the European Union will force all its members to reach the same level of civilization (otherwise we in Popeland will be left without for a very, very long time).

My comment can by summarized by this image:

Oh yes! Italy, Poland, and Ireland (oh, and Malta - they just got divorce legal). I'm just envious of Spain and Portugal that have broken free from the grip of religion.

It's a great day, that's for sure. Of course, it will be fought, but the tide is turning, at least in some areas.

Hey, that's great news!!!
In Canada the provinces began legalizing same-sex marriage in 2003, and in 2005 the federal government passed legislation making it legal across Canada. But we have to remain viligant. When the Conservative government was first elected in 2006 the prime minister declared that he was going to outlaw it, but soon discovered that most of Parliament - and the country - opposed the idea and reneged on his promise. He's still under pressure to do it, though, and since the Conservatives have a majority they could if they wanted to.

It was live on our local all-news channel (New York One) and we watched the votes. When it was tabulated 33-29, we started screaming and jumping up and down. New York is the largest state of the six states who recognize same-sex marriage. We RULE!

I have the feeling that I'm going to have to buy about half a dozen wedding presents this year. And I'm delighted to do it. :D

As a NY resident for 40 odd years, I had planned to be disappointed, I was so relieved that it passed. I was wound up last nite, telling Mr. Slash (that's just odd on so many levels) that, "We're not a red state, why is this so difficult?".
So it is with a happy heart I say, "Thank a deity, certainly not my own"
