Long-form media criticism is a learned skill, and even though he works with the medium, I don't think he's really honed that - the struggle to maintain a product while balancing the desire to create art. There's potential to have a good, productive balance, as HBO consistently proves, but maintaining that on a network which wants advertising revenue is quite difficult.
