BACKSTORY PIECE OF INFORMATION ABOUT WILSON'S LONG-LOST BROTHER!
RSL said at the Fox Winter Party that Wilson's brother is schizophrenic. This had been guessed by many, but this is the first time I've heard it stated by anyone involved with the show.
That makes sense. I really can't wait to see what they do with this character and how they use this character with the House/Wilson relationship. How does this brother play into how Wilson approaches his friendship with House? How much like Wilson is this brother? Is the brother sick (more so than usual)? How will House approach this brother -- as a puzzle? As a competitor for Wilson's attentions? Can House become more needy in order to stay the center of Wilson's world?
I'm just fascinated that they brought him back into the story line at all. Quite frankly, this was a plot point that could have gone either way. Contrary to some beliefs, they really could have just left it at that street corner, and let him be mystery only to be solved by fan fic writers. In the Holmes novels, Watson had a LLB, too, and to the best of my knowledge he was only mentioned once. Then again, he was already dead by that point, but still.
Remember Schizophrenia-Mom POTW? She had Wilson's Disease instead of schizophrenia. That'd be pretty lame if Wilson's brother had Wilson's Disease, wouldn't it?
I am wondering if this plays into why Wilson has no kids -- if the disease runs in his family and he's afraid of passing it on.
I have to stop making up storylines for this in my head, because then if they don't happen I'll be PO'd.
I'm glad they're not going the addict route, the parallels would be too obvious. Hopefully we'll learn about Wilson's brother, not Wilson's brother's illness, so that he won't be a caricature.
Oh, yes, reducing the brother to a caricature would be terrible. I thought the POTW who presented with what they thought was schizophrenia was explored well, as a human being, so that gives me hope that Wilson's brother will be addressed in a similarly fleshed-out manner.
There are so many possibilities for this. So many! I have to keep myself back from making up my own storylines, because when I do that, I get disappointed if they don't happen in canon. D:
They definitely could've left the LLB plot point in "Histories" and never mentioned him again. That's how life works. Wilson hadn't told House the entire time he knew him up until then; it makes sense that Wilson wouldn't bring it up again later.
There are so many possibilities for how he could be brought back in. I've always imagined that the subject would be reintroduced by way of someone notifying Wilson that his brother's been found dead. For him to show up alive... so many ways it could happen.
In Episode 14, the characters supposedly consider how they can make their lives happier -- maybe Wilson decides that finding his brother would make him happier and sets about looking for him. Possibly with the help of Lucas!
Schizophrenia is thought to have a genetic component, so it could run in families. The wikipedia article on it is very interesting.
I always though Wilson didn't have kids because he's been around too many seriously sick kids and heartbroken parents. I can't even imagine how painful it must be to have a kid who has cancer. I actually wrote a fic involving Wilson's brother (I named him "Matthew") but i never posted it because it was too self-indulgent and parts of it were too cutesy and I couldn't think of a good ending.
Delighted as I am by all this, and I am REALLY delighted, I'm writing LLB right now for the first time in my bigbang fic! So it would be really kind of TPTB to hold off on this storyline until after bigbang is live so I can have at least a day or so of 'might be canon' before it becomes totally AU. *goes off to try & incorporate schizophrenia somehow*
Finally! On a selfish note, I am so glad I didn't do LLB backstory for Big Bang this year, because while I'm happy to be proven retroactively wrong, it would be a bit galling to have written something completely contradictory that would probably have been posted simultaneously with canon!
One thing to muse about - I played follow the link on the wikipedia article, and if echolalia was one of LLB's symptoms, then House shouting "admit it" repeatedly in "Birthmarks" may have been a trigger for Wilson beyond just being really, really annoying.
Heh - I just told Dee that I was really glad that I didn't write LLB backstory this year for that exact reason! I can still be screwed by canon for other reasons, but not ones that I care as much about...
I've got to say, House ... his reactions to this will be veeerrrry interesting.
'Cause we already know he's fascinated by "crazy people," possessive (and in his own difficult way, even protective) of Wilson, and insatiably curious about anyone who means anything to him personally. Wilson in particular.
The mixture could get very, very volatile, couldn't it? Wow. I hope it does just that, and in a believable way.

Or maybe it'll be really compelling, ahaha.

Yeah, that's a very good point! Very possible. As if he weren't tragic enough already, ahahah.
Aha, well, you can write them if they don't happen on the show. <33333 I AM LEARNING TO ENJOY DISAPPOINTMENT.

And even if they don't ... at least it'll get the cameras off Thirteen for a few minutes.
