An analogy between two fandoms
Jul. 2nd, 2008 02:49 pmSo,
bammel posed an excellent, thought-provoking question (and
spoggly posted it), that I will paraphrase here:
"How can people be so rabid and uptight in their desire for two fictional middle-aged, emotionally stunted men to have a sexual relationship?"
In considering this, I suddenly realized what House/Wilson shipping often reminds me of: Mulder/Scully shipping from the early years of The X-Files.
You had Mulder/Scully shippers who saw eros in Mulder and Scully's intense, dedicated relationship, despite the repeated insistence of producers that what they had was a professional partnership and friendship.
You had other fans (NoRoMos) who were scornful of the shippers, and expressed an attitude something like: "Why can't people just be close as friends without you crazy idiots bringing sex into everything. They are still topmost in each others' lives without sex. STOP TALKING about Mulder and Scully going to bed together because it will never happen."
And then Scully had Mulder's baby and they rode off into the sunset with each other.
I'm just saying.
(PS for LID: Mulder/Krycek = House/Cuddy. Oh yeah, it does!)

X-FILES SLASH EXISTS TOO

Date: 2008-07-02 07:08 pm (UTC)IF I TOOK IT FURTHER MULDER/KRYCEK WOULD BE HOUSE/CUDDY. SIZZLING POPPIN' SEXUAL ENERGY IN ALMOST EVERY SCENE, PLUS THEY TOTALLY DID IT AT LEAST ONCE FOR REALS.

Date: 2008-07-02 07:10 pm (UTC)SORRY ABOUT THAT.
I GET USED TO FANS ON SOME MESSAGEBOARDS THINKING SHIPPER OR NOROMO ARE THE ONLY TWO CATEGORIES OF FANS; I KNOW THAT'S NOT WHAT YOU THINK.
AND THAT IS AN EXCELLENT ANALOGY.

Date: 2008-07-02 07:10 pm (UTC)I almost typed "Mulder had Scully's baby?" omg.

Date: 2008-07-02 07:11 pm (UTC)Do you watch The X-Files? Do you have opinions on the direction and cinematography of the different episodes? 'Cause, man, I'd sign up for that newsletter.

Date: 2008-07-02 07:16 pm (UTC)And in some ways M/K is like House/Cameron because of the starting-out-with-hero-worship thing?
(moved cos I replied in the wrong place)
Edit again: but \O/ !! to your p.s. :)

Date: 2008-07-02 07:28 pm (UTC)Apart from the fact Wilson can't physically have House's baby (they can keep trying, though *leers*), this makes perfect sense!
(no subject)
Date: 2008-07-02 07:33 pm (UTC)That just...
:O
However, this *does* give me hope for House/Wilson being canon.
I mean, fuck, I've heard a friend's father consider House/Wilson canon.

Date: 2008-07-02 07:36 pm (UTC)Oh, Mulder/Scully - the UST, the drama, the banter. On the one hand I want them to be together forever and have the most sex possible, on the other I want them to be in a fucked-up and platonic relationship eternally (though the UST can stay, that's A+).
(LOL, AS YOU SAY, I WONDER WHAT ATTRACTED ME TO H/W LO THESE MANY YEARS LATER)

Date: 2008-07-02 07:45 pm (UTC)The two also revealed that yes, Mulder is the father of Scully's baby

But I'm still in denial about S8&9, more or less. ;)

this is probably one of the best posts ever.

Date: 2008-07-02 11:14 pm (UTC)So...I know you're making a comparison to H/W here but my initial response was:
OMG! YES! THERE IS HOPE FOR JOHN AND RODNEY AFTER ALL!
I wasn't aware of this "Baby William" business. I think that the show had become to painful for me to watch by that point.
Mulder/Krycek :TBD slobber emoticon:

Date: 2008-07-02 11:27 pm (UTC)Yeah, the show did get pretty painful there in the last few seasons. I'm hearing good things about the new movie, though.
Mulder/Krycek = total :slobber: They had so much energy between them. I swear to God, in a few of the episodes I expected them to start making out at any second.

Date: 2008-07-02 11:28 pm (UTC)Nick Lea (Krycek) should be patient of the week some time. Yum!

Date: 2008-07-02 11:39 pm (UTC)I love thinking about it, because there's such a thing as taking a 'ship (any 'ship) way too seriously, but then again, some people seem to feel that genuine pleasure and interest in a 'ship (or a series, a character, or a hobby) is somehow unacceptable. My favorite people in fandom are those that can strike a balance: genuinely enjoy things and think seriously about them but also have a good time.

Date: 2008-07-02 11:41 pm (UTC)I AM. THEIR LOVE IS SO TRUE. BUT THEY WOULD NEVER SETTLE DOWN TOGETHER.
John and Rodney might.

Date: 2008-07-02 11:48 pm (UTC)Also, Scully is hot. I don't think I ever got over that promo pic of her in bed with David Duchovny and Chris Carter. *slobber*

Date: 2008-07-03 01:55 am (UTC)Yeah, you've hit the nail on the head -- it's really important to have a sense of perspective about it! I do love fandom and all its craziness, but sometimes I get a little frightened when the biz gets too srs.
P.S. Mulder/Scully 4evz, ok.
(no subject)
Date: 2008-07-03 02:35 am (UTC)Okay, how many times has fandom written some cross of House and Wilson's genetic matter at this point? It's only a matter of time, really.

Furthermore, is it just me or did Gillian Anderson and Hugh Laurie exchange careers sometime between 2002 and 2004? At least the "Star of Fox's top-rated drama" and "Doing costume dramas and comedies with Stephen Fry*" bits. (No word on the novel-writing, appearing in Annie Lennox-videos, Armani-print-ads bits).
An added bonus: David Duchovny went to Princeton.
