And the sense of place and the situation was wonderfully revealed. Just enough to fit everything together. Fascinating society.

I've actually seen a pillory post in the Criminal Museum in Rothenberg in Germany. There are woodblock prints of people chained up. So this took place in a woodblock carving for me.
